Hey there, boo-boo, will you go watch the new Labubu movie with me?
The internet’s favourite mischievous collectible is heading to the big screen. Labubu, the wide-eyed, slightly feral forest elf that’s taken over blind boxes, resale platforms, and designer bag charms, is officially getting a film adaptation.
Developed by Pop Mart in collaboration with Sony Pictures, the project is currently in early stages, but already comes with serious creative backing. Paul King, the mind behind Paddington and Wonka, is set to direct, produce, and co-write the film alongside Steven Levenson. Expect a hybrid of live-action and CGI, with King’s signature whimsy likely to shape Labubu’s transition from toy shelf to cinematic universe.
Originally created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu belongs to “The Monsters,” a larger fantasy world that already lends itself neatly to franchise-building. That’s no coincidence. As Pop Mart looks to sustain momentum following the toy’s explosive (and slightly volatile) resale boom in 2025, expanding into storytelling feels less like a strategic evolution.
Labubu’s rise has been nothing short of global, fuelled by the addictive appeal of blind boxes and co-signs from celebrities like Lisa and Rihanna. But as hype cycles inevitably cool, a film offers something more durable: emotional connection.
For Pop Mart, beyond making a movie, this is about building an IP ecosystem where characters live beyond collectibles—across screens, spaces, and potentially even theme parks.
No release date or casting details have been announced so far, with the film still in early development. The project was unveiled during Labubu’s 10th anniversary global exhibition tour, where Kasing Lung was also confirmed as an executive producer.
