Christopher Nolan’s next unnamed project has been the internet’s hot topic with new updates dropping now and then. In case you have missed it, here’s a round-up of all the recent developments and everything we know about the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie hitting the screens in 2026.
The project marks the auteur’s 13th film as director, after the 2023 box-office tour de force Oppenheimer — one of the movies with most Oscar nominations, and he is penning the script as well. The next Nolan film has a string of A-list cast and is expected to be yet another record-breaking hit!
PS: We hear Matt Damon and Tom Holland are joining the cast in a father-and-son story.
Here are all the details we know about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie with Universal
Release date and production
From the looks of it, this new film is gearing up to make the summer of 2026 quite eventful. While the project is expected to start shooting in early 2025, it is slated to be a 17 July 2026 IMAX release.
The film is backed by Universal Pictures, the production house behind Nolan’s Oscar-winning historical epic Oppenheimer. This team-up began after Nolan severed ties with Warner Bros after Tenet (2020) due to disagreements over simultaneous OTT and theatrical releases.
Depicting the life and works of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb and head of the Manhattan Project during World War II, Oppenheimer was a massive success. According to Box Office Mojo, it amassed a worldwide box office collection of over USD 975 million.
Do we know anything about the plot of the new Christopher Nolan movie?
The plot is kept under tight wraps. The Hollywood Reporter states, “The setting is not present day (although it’s unclear whether it’s set in the past or the future).” The publication also clarifies that the upcoming film is “not a big-screen take on 1960s British series The Prisoner, an endeavour Nolan contemplated in the 2000s.”
When The Atlantic asked him about his next project in November 2023, the filmmaker said, “[You’re] wasting your last question.” “It’s really about finding the story that I want to be engaged with in the years it takes to make a film,” he added.
The star-studded cast of the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie

The Christopher Nolan film is dropping cast updates quite frequently and from the looks of it, it seems like a galore of A-list stars.
Matt Damon was among the first people announced to be joining Nolan’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning drama. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Interstellar star had been in talks since late September and early October 2024 about the director’s upcoming return to the theatres. This marks Damon’s third outing with Nolan after the 2014 sci-fi hit and Oppenheimer.
Along with him, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) star Tom Holland was also confirmed as a cast member. In October, Esquire mentioned that the two have joined the film in the “father-and-son story for the ages” and are expected to lead the project.
Speaking to Good Morning America, Holland said, “When the opportunity came in, it was the phone call of a lifetime. It was reminiscent of getting the call about Spider-Man ten years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud. I’m really, really excited.”
Anne Hathaway and Zendaya have also been added to the cast. For Hathaway, this would be her third collaboration with the master filmmaker after The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Interstellar. Hathaway had a busy 2024 with the thriller Mother’s Instinct alongside Jessica Chastain and The Idea of You. She is also set to star in Warner Bros’ Flowervale Station slated to release in 2025.
On the other hand, it is Zendaya’s first time working with Nolan. She started 2024 with Dune: Part Two, which grossed over USD 700 million at the worldwide box office. This was followed up by her tennis drama Challengers at Amazon MGM Studios.
Also joining the cast is Lupita Nyong’o. Although this is her first Christopher Nolan movie, the actor, who won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave (2013), has previously worked under the Universal Pictures banner for the 2024 animated film The Wild Robot.
Next on the list is Tenet star Robert Pattinson. Variety confirmed the news on 20 November 2024. Warner Bros. is in talks for a sequel for The Batman (2022), where he starred as the titular character. Pattinson will also be seen in the upcoming A24 thriller Primetime, slated to release in early 2025 and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17.
The latest name to join the cast of the new Christopher Nolan movie is Charlize Theron. This is also her first time entering the Nolanverse. On the work front, the Oscar-winning actress will begin production on the Netflix survival thriller Apex opposite Taron Egerton.
