When Crazy Rich Asians came out in 2018, it made waves in cinemas across the globe. It was a groundbreaking project at the time, featuring a major Hollywood studio film with an all-Asian cast, with the last to do so being 1993’s Joy Luck Club. The film became a pop culture staple (not to mention a must-watch airplane movie), putting Singapore on the map as a dream destination to visit. And who can forget that wedding scene? For the last eight years, fans have been asking for a potential sequel—and their wishes have finally been granted.
On 8 October, Deadline reported that the team behind the original film has been working on a sequel television series. A slew of creatives behind the original film will be working on this new series as executive producers, including film co-writer Adele Lim, director Jon M. Chu, and author Kevin Kwan. “Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros Television has been a dream,” Lim said of the new project. While most of the details about the show have been kept under wraps, here’s everything we know about it so far.
Crazy Rich Asians TV Series

2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kwan’s novel of the same name, follows NYU professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she visits boyfriend Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) home country of Singapore to attend Nick’s best friend’s wedding. It was only on the first-class flight to Singapore that Rachel discovers that Nick is not only rich, but crazy rich. The film follows Rachel’s journey as she navigates meeting Nick’s affluent and traditional family and going toe-to-toe with his mother, Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh).
The series will consist of eight one-hour-long episodes on HBO Max and, notably, will be a drama, as opposed to the original film’s romantic comedy tone.
Confirmed Returning Cast

So far, four cast members are slated to reprise their roles in the upcoming series. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng will have main roles in the series, alongside Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, who will have a recurring role. Speaking about the cast, Jon M. Chu noted their flourishing careers since the film’s release and said that “bringing everyone back together feels like coming home”.
Potential Plot Lines

The cast and crew have been very tight-lipped about plot details, but based on the sequel books, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, there are some storylines that they might be adapting. One fan-favourite storyline is the romance between Gemma Chan’s Astrid Leong and Harry Shum Jr.’s Charlie Wu. Charlie was supposed to be properly introduced in the original film. However, the role was reduced to a small cameo in a mid-credits scene, teasing the storyline for a future installment. While it’s yet to be confirmed whether Chan or Shum will be joining the cast, we’re certain that long-time fans will be crossing their fingers to finally get to see this relationship develop on screen.
By shifting the genre towards a drama, the show could also lean into the mature themes and messier moments from the book. Other potential plotlines include Rachel discovering the truth about her estranged father, Nick’s grandmother Su Yi’s declining health, which brings them back to Singapore in hopes of making amends, and Rachel and Nick’s wedding—because Chu has an eye for gorgeous wedding scenes.
Expected Release Date

Production is set to begin in 2027, and depending on when production wraps, we may be able to expect a release date that same year. Stay tuned to GRAZIA Singapore for more updates from this highly anticipated series.
