You may not notice them at first, but they’re everywhere. Thousands of AI-powered CCTVs are now operating across Kuala Lumpur, marking one of the city’s biggest steps toward becoming a fully connected smart city.

Around the city, 10,000 CCTV cameras have received a massive brain transplant. They’ve been upgraded with high-level AI that can recognize faces, flag “unusual” behaviour, and track movement across the city in real-time.

The goal is part of KL’s push to become a smarter, safer urban space. We all know the usual struggles: snatch thefts, traffic madness, and flash floods.

This system aims to:

  • Flag incidents instantly: Upgraded AI system can automatically detect incidents like road accidents, flash floods, suspicious activity, and other emergency situations in real time.
  • Track suspects: Identify individuals, helping authorities track crime suspects across Kuala Lumpur.
  • Manage traffic: Cameras can detect congestion and help authorities react before the jam becomes a nightmare.

The “Uncomfortable” Part

But while safety goes up, our “invisibility” goes down. Most of us don’t realize how powerful this is. With facial recognition, you’re no longer just a face in the crowd at Bukit Bintang. You are identifiable and trackable. But for many, it’s a fair trade for a safer walk to the LRT.

The Bottom Line

Kuala Lumpur is joining the big leagues of global surveillance. It’s efficient, it’s high-tech, and it’s likely here to stay. So, is this a win for city safety, or a step too far? Let us know what you think.
