A former aide to a federal minister couldn’t stop the tears from flowing after a judge ordered him to serve time in jail and pay a hefty fine.
This comes after Kuala Lumpur Sessions court judge Suzana Hussin ruled that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt in the case.
Accused of taking RM1.7mil in bribes
According to FMT, Saifullah Minggu, who was an aide to then-tourism, arts and culture minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, was slapped with eight charges of accepting RM1,765,000 in bribes from the owner of Inter Bev Network Sdn Bhd.
The money was an incentive for Saifullah to secure Inter Bev a tender for brand and creative production services.
The offenses allegedly took place at various locations Dec 21, 2018 and March 1, 2019.
‘I hope you repent’
In court, Saifullah was sentenced to six years in jail and ordered to pay RM8.8 million in fines. He was also ordered to serve another seven years in prison if he failed to pay the fine.
When he heard the sentence, Saifullah reportedly broke down in tears.
In response, judge Suzana told Saifullah: “You are still young. I hope you will truly repent and change for the better.”
She also allowed a stay of execution pending an appeal at the High Court and set bail at RM280,000.
