Ex-England cricket and rugby international dies at the age of 92

  • Former England cricket captain Mike Smith, known as MJK, has passed away at the age of 92, as confirmed by Warwickshire County Cricket Club on Monday morning.
  • Smith played 50 Test matches for England, captaining the side on 25 occasions, and also earned a rugby union cap for England against Wales in 1956.
  • His extensive first-class career, primarily with Warwickshire, spanned nearly two decades, during which he accumulated close to 40,000 runs.
  • After retiring from playing, Smith served as Warwickshire chairman from 1991 to 2003, a period that saw the club win seven major trophies, including back-to-back County Championship titles.
  • A moment of silence was observed before the start of play on day four of Warwickshire's County Championship match against Glamorgan to honour his significant contributions to English sport.
