Ex-F1 champion Raikkonen's son joins Red Bull academy

MADRID, Spain — Robin Raikkonen, the son of 2007 Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen, has joined Red Bull's junior driver program, the team announced on Wednesday.

The 11-year-old, who has been karting from an early age, has already secured victories at national and international level, Red Bull said in a statement.

"Robin has already demonstrated exceptional ability in karting. His speed, race craft and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group," said Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies.

"Our goal is to develop him step by step, without placing any unnecessary pressure on his shoulders. The path through motorsport is a long one, and we will give him the time, support and resources he needs to maximize his potential."

Red Bull's junior program has produced a number of leading F1 drivers, including four-time world champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Raikkonen is the last man to win a world championship with Ferrari, pipping McLaren duo Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso to the title by a single point in 2007.

"We are all thrilled and excited that Robin has been chosen to further his racing path as a member of the Red Bull junior team," said Raikkonen.
