Ex-Finance secretary joins Megaworld board

FORMER Department of Finance secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez has joined the board of property developer Megaworld Corp. as lead independent director.

Dominguez brings more than four decades of experience in government, finance and business, including leadership positions in banking, power, aviation, agriculture, mining, hospitality, real estate and investments, Megaworld said.

“We are honored to welcome Secretary Sonny Dominguez to Megaworld’s Board of Directors. Throughout his distinguished career, he has helped shape the country’s economic landscape through principled leadership in government, finance and business,” Megaworld Chairman Andrew Tan said in a statement.

“His depth of experience and strategic perspective will be invaluable as the company enters its next chapter of growth,” he added.

Dominguez served as finance secretary from 2016 to 2022, during which time he led the DOF through major economic and fiscal reforms. He also previously served as agriculture secretary, and environment and natural resources secretary in the late 1980s.

Before returning to government service, Dominguez held senior executive and board positions at several Philippine companies, including serving as chairman and president of Philippine Airlines and leadership roles at Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corp., BPI Agricultural Development Bank and RCBC Capital Corp.

Megaworld said Dominguez’s appointment would strengthen its board’s independent oversight as the company continues to expand its presence in key economic and tourism destinations across the Philippines.

Dominguez holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in business management from Ateneo de Manila University. He also attended Stanford University’s Executive Management Program.

Megaworld develops integrated townships combining residential, office, retail and hospitality projects.

On Tuesday, the company’s shares surged P0.11, or 5.02 percent, to close at P2.30 each.
