Several explosions occurred near Tehran in the middle of the night, with Iranian state media reporting blasts in the commuter hub of Karaj, just a few kilometres from the capital.

Drones were also spotted further west of Karaj, according to state media, although no details were initially available.

Social media users reported a wave of strikes near the capital following earlier US bombardments of targets along Iran's southern coast, more than 1,000 kilometres away.

An online journalist known as Vahid said on Telegram that multiple explosions near Karaj shook buildings and windows and woke residents. One resident was quoted as saying: "Two terrible explosion sounds came from the direction of Karaj. They have struck again." Another said the Pajam airport appeared to have been hit, describing being jolted awake by the blast.

Explosions were also reported in Varamin, south-east of Tehran, according to state news agency IRNA. Authorities did not immediately comment on the cause.
