Police in The Hague forcibly removed and detained climate and anti-war activists staging a sit-down protest at a petrol station on Wednesday. The action, led by Extinction Rebellion and joined by other groups, aimed to disrupt the high-level NATO summit hosted in the Dutch city.

The summit, gathering 32 world leaders, is expected to finalise a controversial new defence spending target pushed by US President Donald Trump. Tensions rose ahead of the talks, with a larger demonstration taking place on Sunday. Hundreds marched to oppose NATO’s military expansion and express fears over a potential escalation with Iran.
