
TAWAU: Police detained a man suspected of being involved in extortion through a telephone call.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the victim lodged a report after giving in to the suspect’s threats.
“The 39-year-old suspect accused the victim of disturbing his business and threatened to cut off the victim’s head,” he said, Thursday.

“However, after the transaction, the suspect contacted the victim again and demanded additional RM1,500 to resolve the issue,” he added.
Jasmin said a team from the Criminal Investigation Department at the Tawau District Police Headquarters arrested the suspect to assist with the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or caning, or two of these penalties.
“A check of the suspect’s criminal record revealed that he had previously been convicted under the same section and was wanted in other states,” he said.
