Lando Norris took advantage of Oscar Piastri’s penalty to win the British Grand Prix for the first time in his career.
During a wild, wet and chaotic race at Silverstone, Piastri was dealt a 10-second sanction by the stewards after he slammed on his brakes at 130mph ahead of a safety car restart.
Max Verstappen was forced to take evasive action with the stewards coming down hard on the Australian. It cost Piastri the win, with Norris crossing the line 6.8 seconds clear of his championship team-mate and McLaren rival.
Norris’ fourth victory of the season allows him to reduce the championship deficit from 15 points to eight with his second win in as many weekends – while Nico Hulkenberg landed his first podium in Formula One after 239 starts. Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth.

"We didn't think it was right, we thought it was harsh" - McLaren CEO on Piastri penalty

After Oscar Piastri received a penalty following what the FIA claimed was “erratic braking on the straight when the safety car lights were extinguished,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown said that decisions like those are “subjective” and that the team “didn’t think it was right, we thought it was harsh.”
He went on to say that the braking looked worse on TV.
However, he added: “I don’t think it would be appropriate for us to start overriding penalties.”
The finishing order was a positive for the team with a McLaren one, two.

Hamilton looked primed to win, or at least podium, at his home race earlier this race week. The British driver led a free practice and started in fifth after an impressive qualifying performance.

Despite having a better handle of a struggling Ferrari, the 40-year-old driver didn’t have a whole lot to take away from the weekend: “It’s amazing to see so many people switch to red,” Hamilton said. He added that finishing within the points, in fourth, was a positive.
However, with a podium within reach at his home race, the result was bittersweet.

Max Verstappen will try to turn pole position into a race win at the British Grand Prix this afternoon after silencing home fans by seeing off McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in qualifying at Silverstone.
Verstappen did not look to be in the hunt for first place heading into Saturday but he pulled a brilliant lap out of the bag to beat Piastri by 0.103 seconds with Norris third, 0.118 seconds adrift.
George Russell took fourth for Mercedes, one place ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had dared to dream of a first pole position for Ferrari, but ended up two tenths off the pace. Charles Leclerc qualified sixth in the other Ferrari.
Verstappen was only fourth after the opening runs in Q3 at a gusty and overcast Silverstone, and complained his Red Bull was difficult to drive. However, when it mattered most the four-time world champion came from nowhere to take top spot - his first pole since Miami at the beginning of May.

“I thought the penalty was pretty bad,” Piastri said post-British Grand Prix. “But, anyway, glad we had a quick car today. ... Just disappointing when the result you deserve gets taken from you.”
“I hit the brakes, saw the safety car lights went off so I didn’t accelerate again and Max went past me, which was a bit strange, and then I got a penalty,” he explained. “About as simple as that.”
Oscar Piastri fumes after penalty costs him British GP win: ‘I’ll get myself in trouble’

Oscar Piastri was visibly furious after a 10-second penalty in the British Grand Prix cost him victory.
Piastri’s McLaren teammate and championship rival Lando Norris took victory at his home race, with the Australian coming home in second.
Yet Piastri cost himself victory after he was given a penalty for an infringement behind the safety car while leading the race.
Piastri broke heavily, with Max Verstappen behind him forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision. The stewards quickly made their call, giving Piastri a penalty which ultimately cost him victory.

From here on in, Lando Norris will want his own personal grandstand at every race. The 25-year-old, arguably the sport’s most popular driver amongst the Netflix generation of F1 fans, had expectations sky-high this weekend at Silverstone, racing for the quickest team in a championship-contending season.
And for the 10,000 decked in bright yellow in the ‘LandoStand’ at Stowe corner, who bought tickets in the space of an hour last autumn, they were rewarded for their enthusiasm and endeavour amid grey skies around them with a dramatic win for their man on Sunday.
Norris took the chequered flag by five seconds, becoming the 13th British driver to win his home grand prix, while Oscar Piastri was left to rue a costly mid-race error behind the safety car. For the Australian, usually a modicum of composure, the customary post-race interview hit saw how vigorously his blood was boiling. “I’ll get myself in trouble,” he said.

Why did Oscar Piastri receive a 10-second penalty at British Grand Prix?
Sunday 6 July 2025 16:26
,
Olivia Hicks
Oscar Piastri received a 10-second time penalty in the middle of the British Grand Prix for an infringement behind the safety car.
The Australian, who started second on the grid, took the lead from Max Verstappen with superior speed on lap eight.
Yet after a series of yellow flags and safety cars amid chaos in wet conditions, Piastri made a costly error with the safety car entering the pit-lane on lap 21.
At the Hangar Straight in sector three, Piastri inexplicably braked heavily, forcing Verstappen behind him to take drastic action to avoid a collision.
