Lando Norris reminded Max Verstappen of his F1 world championship credentials by taking a brilliant pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix.

The British driver, who trails Verstappen by 78 points in the standings with 10 rounds still to play, saw off his rival by 0.356 seconds to silence the 100,000 spectators hoping to see the Dutchman start the Zandvoort race from the front.

Verstappen, without a win from his last four appearances, will start alongside Norris on the front row. Oscar Piastri took third, half a second down on McLaren team-mate Norris.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished fourth as Lewis Hamilton endured an afternoon to forget after he failed to make it out of Q2. He will line up from 12th for Sunday’s 72-lap race.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lando Norris after his second win in Formula 1...

16:08

Kieran Jackson

“It feels amazing, not a perfect race because of lap one today, but the pace was very strong. The car was beautiful today. Quite a straightforward race.

“I have some Dutch fans, hope they’re not upset. From quite early on, lap five or six, I expected Max to push and get a gap but he never did. He was dropping off and mine was getting better and especially when I got past, it’s a good feeling in the car.”

“Very surprised, I’m not very often happy with P3 but we can be extremely happy with the job we’ve done. It’s been a difficult weekend but we executed a perfect strategy - undercut two competitors and kept them behind.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: LANDO NORRIS WINS!

15:35

Kieran Jackson

A brilliant win for the Brit in Zandvoort - his second victory in Formula 1 and with a margin of over 21 seconds! And he takes the fastest lap right at the end!

Max Verstappen, for the first time, doesn’t win at home and has to settle for second. Charles Leclerc takes a decent third place and podium for Ferrari!

4-10: Piastri, Sainz, Perez, Russell, Hamilton, Gasly, Alonso

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Final lap (Lap 72/72)

15:33

Kieran Jackson

What a statement of intent this is from Lando Norris and McLaren as he starts the final lap with a 20-second lead over Max Verstappen!

He will cut Verstappen’s lead in the world championship...

Lewis Hamilton, incidentally, still has the fastest lap in eighth but George Russell in seventh is over five seconds behind Sergio Perez - why did they pit him?!

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Procession now for Lando Norris (Lap 66/72)

15:28

Kieran Jackson

How good must this feel for Lando Norris - a man so desperate to add to his solitary win in Miami, cruising 18 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen at the Dutchman’s home race,.

Further back, Piastri is now 1.1 seconds behind Leclerc with a podium slipping away from the Australian, while George Russell is 8.3 seconds behind Sergio Perez - I think he may have too much to do!

Top-10: Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz, Perez, Russell, Hamilton, Gasly, Hulkenberg

Just over 10 laps to go... we haven’t had any yellow flags or safety cars so far, will we get some late drama?

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: George Russell pits (Lap 55/72)

15:14

Kieran Jackson

Interesting!

Russell pits from fifth place and switches to new soft tyres after a 2.8 second pit stop. He comes out in seventh, 19 seconds behind Sergio Perez in sixth.

Can he make up a few places in the remaining 15 laps or so?

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri can’t get past Charles Leclerc (Lap 51/72)

15:10

Kieran Jackson

Good consistency for Ferrari here in the form of Charles Leclerc, who is holding off Oscar Piastri behind him in fourth despite the McLaren having DRS.

Out in front, Lando Norris builds his lead to 14 seconds to Max Verstappen. Leclerc is 6.2 seconds behind the Dutchman.

Lewis Hamilton, in eighth, has set the fastest lap after switching to soft tyres, given he had a free pit stop to Nico Hulkenberg in ninth...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lando Norris builds his lead (Lap 46/72)

15:02

Kieran Jackson

It’s now 12 seconds. Stunning speed from the papaya!

Further down, Oscar Piastri now has DRS behind Charles Leclerc - he’s 0.8 seconds behind the Ferrari in third place!

5-10: Russell, Perez, Sainz, Hamilton, Hulkenberg, Gasly

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri up to fourth (Lap 40/72)

14:56

Kieran Jackson

Piastri surges down the outside of Russell and - like his team-mate - the McLaren is just too hot to handle! He’s up to fourth - and Charles Leclerc is 3.2 secs down the road.

Out in front, Lando Norris is now an astonishing 10 seconds clear of Max Verstappen!

Meanwhile, Lance Stroll in 14th place receives a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit-lane. Ouch.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri pits (Lap 34/72)

14:48

Kieran Jackson

Piastri comes in for a speedy 2.4 second stop and rejoins the race in fifth place, behind Russell and ahead of Perez.

Norris is now 7.3 seconds clear of Verstappen at the front - stunning racepace from McLaren!

Top-10: Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell, Piastri, Perez, Sainz, Hamilton, Hulkenberg, Magnussen

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri remains in the lead (Lap 33/72)

14:46

Kieran Jackson

Piastri is losing about two seconds a lap to Norris at the front - it’s a matter of time before McLaren bring the Aussie in.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton is now up to eighth - a reminder he started 14th on the grid.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lando Norris pits (Lap 29/72)

14:41

Kieran Jackson

Not a perfect stop for McLaren - 3.1 seconds - but it’s fine. Norris comes out in fourth but just under five seconds ahead of Verstappen!

Oscar Piastri now leads - but of course hasn’t stopped yet!

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Max Verstappen pits (Lap 28/72)

14:39

Kieran Jackson

Given how much his pace has dropped off, Verstappen comes in - 2.5 second stop and he comes out in fifth on hard tyres.

Surely Norris responds straight away and pits?!

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lando Norris’ lead is five seconds! (Lap 26/72)

14:36

Kieran Jackson

Norris has built this lead so quickly! It’s now five seconds!

George Russell pits from third to ninth, behind Alonso and Leclerc...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Max Verstappen... (Lap 24/72)

14:34

Kieran Jackson

Verstappen: “I can’t go faster, the car doesn’t respond to my inputs.”

When will he stop?!

Lewis Hamilton, who was on softs, pits and switches to hard tyres - and drops to 16th. Will that be enough to go until the end of the race?

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lando Norris stretches his advantage (Lap 22/72)

14:32

Kieran Jackson

Norris gets beyond the one-second margin so Verstappen does not have DRS in second - and goes seven-tenths quicker on that last lap as the lead increases to 1.9 seconds.

A lot of discussion over team radio about strategy - plan A seems to be the call for McLaren, which is presumably a one-stop.

Top-10: Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Piastri, Leclerc, Perez, Sainz, Gasly, Hamilton, Alonso

Lando Norris gets the move done!

His McLaren had much more pace and cruised past Max Verstappen down the inside on the start-finish straight with DRS!

Verstappen tried to fight it around turn 1 but to no avail - Norris has the lead!

14:17

Kieran Jackson

The Mercedes driver cruises down the inside of Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg to get on the edge of the points.

He’s not happy, though. “I’m too slow on the straights,” he says on team radio.

Carlos Sainz makes a move stick on Pierre Gasly at turn 3... just!

Kieran Jackson

Lambiase: “That’s good Max, keep it up - just watch that rear-left sliding.”

Composed and satisfied down at Red Bull. The gap remains at 1.5 seconds to Norris.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Max Verstappen’s lead is 1.6 seconds (Lap 6/72)

14:12

Kieran Jackson

Verstappen in his element here, leading the race and extending his lead in front of his home fans!

Norris can’t keep the lead again!

Verstappen surges up the inside at turn 1 to take the lead to huge cheers from the grandstand!

And Oscar Piastri has lost third to George Russell - nightmare start for McLaren! Thye both had too much wheelspin at the beginning...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Formation lap!

14:00

Kieran Jackson

Lando Norris leads the pack around for the formation lap!

The top-10 all start on medium tyres, with Yuki Tsunoda in 11th and Lewis Hamilton in 14th on soft tyres.

Norris has never led after lap one when starting on pole - will that change today in front of 100,000 Dutch fans?!

Christian Horner ‘relieved’ after female colleague’s appeal over ‘inappropriate behaviour’ dismissed

13:10

Kieran Jackson

Christian Horner admits he is “relieved” that the appeal from a female colleague alleging “inappropriate behaviour” was dismissed in the F1 summer break.

Red Bull F1 chief executive and team principal Horner was originally cleared of any wrongdoing back in March, having been accused by a female member of staff of “coercive, inappropriate behaviour.”

Horner, 50, was exonerated on the eve of the opening race of the season in Bahrain before a deluge of sexually suggestive texts – allegedly between Horner and the complainant – were leaked to members of the paddock. The veracity of the texts have not been verified, since it came from an anonymous email address.

The complainant was then suspended on full pay before launching an appeal. But on 8 August, her appeal was thrown out following another investigation by a different independent KC – with Red Bull adding that their “internal process has concluded.”

Jack Doohan promoted to F1 seat at Alpine to replace Esteban Ocon in 2025

12:48

Kieran Jackson

Jack Doohan will race for Alpine next year after his promotion to Formula 1 was announced on Friday morning.

The 21-year-old Australian, son of five-time 500cc motorcycling world champion Mick Doohan, has been the team’s reserve driver for the last two years.

He finished third in Formula 2 last year and has now been rewarded for his patience on the sidelines with a call-up to the 20-driver grid next year. He will replace Haas-bound Esteban Ocon.

Should Daniel Ricciardo extend his stay with RB or Red Bull next year, it means there will be three Australians on the grid in 2025, with Doohan joining McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

Lewis Hamilton’s engineer turns down chance to join Mercedes star at Ferrari

12:31

Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton’s long-term race engineer Peter Bonnington will not join the seven-time F1 world champion at Ferrari next year after receiving a promotion at Mercedes.

Hamilton will end his 12-year stint at Mercedes at the end of this season after six world titles with the Silver Arrows. Bonnington has been the voice of wisdom over team radio for all of those triumphs.

Yet Bonnington, known as “Bono” in the paddock, will be Mercedes’ head of race engineering from 2025 and will not join Hamilton with his new venture at the Scuderia.

Bonnington, 49, will also be a race engineer for either George Russell or, more likely, Hamilton’s replacement next season.

Max Verstappen unsure of long-term F1 future ahead of milestone at Dutch GP

12:12

Kieran Jackson

Max Verstappen insists he is “past halfway” through his F1 career as he brings up his 200th race at the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.

The three-time F1 world champion, who made his debut in 2015 at the age of 17, has a contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season but is unsure whether he will race beyond that date.

Verstappen has previously stated that racing into his late 30s or 40s, like rivals Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, is not on the cards – and he reiterated that belief as F1 returns with his home race at Zandvoort this weekend following the summer break.

Lando Norris says desperation has not set in as he bids to turn pole into win

11:42

Kieran Jackson

Lando Norris claimed he is not desperate to convert his pole position into victory at Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old Briton reminded Max Verstappen of his championship credentials with a scintillating lap in Zandvoort to finish 0.356 seconds clear of his Red Bull rival.

Norris’ speed by the seaside was underlined with a half-second advantage over Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren, who will line up from third for Sunday’s 72-lap race.

Verstappen temporarily bumped Norris off the summit to huge cheers, only for Norris to knock the home favourite – who had taken three poles and three wins since the sport returned to the Netherlands in 2021 – off his perch.
