F1 LIVE: Massive Valtteri Bottas crash triggers game-changing red flag in Mexico

Formula 1 returns to Mexico City this weekend for the Mexican Grand Prix - with Kimi Antonelli set to seal the world championship.

The 20-year-old Italian holds a 123-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell and a 124-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton after his victory in Austin last time out. If Antonelli finishes ninth or higher in Mexico, he will be crowned world champion and, even if he doesn’t, Russell or Hamilton need to win the grand prix to extend the title race to Brazil.

Antonelli cruised to victory from pole in Texas, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in second and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third. Hamilton missed out on a podium, while an early penalty resulted in Russell finishing a lowly eighth.

Lando Norris won last year’s race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, on his way to his maiden world title. After missing out last year, Sergio Perez returns to his home race off the back of signing a new contract with Cadillac this week.

  • Kimi Antonelli is on the cusp of his first world championship

Race will resume at 9:45pm GMT

21:36 , Kieran Jackson

There it is: race will resume in 10 minutes.

And Hamilton will line up in third. Hopefully that improves his mood...

Revised resumption order

21:28 , Kieran Jackson

Oh. Interesting.

The FIA have reverted the order back to before the red flag. So that puts Hamilton back in third, with Antonelli in fourth.

That. Is. Unexpected.

Still no resumption time I’m afraid, though the barrier at turn one does seem to be fixed.

Valtteri Bottas suffers massive crash after car failure in Mexican Grand Prix

21:19 , Kieran Jackson

Valtteri Bottas escaped unharmed after suffering a massive crash on lap 45 of Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix.

The 37-year-old Finnish driver was running at the back of the grid when his Cadillac car suffered a failure at turn one – the end of the massive long straight in Mexico City.

The front-left tyre of Bottas’ car burst, resulting in a spin and the rear of the Cadillac car smashing into the barrier.

Valtteri Bottas suffers massive crash after car failure in Mexican Grand Prix

Bottas crash

21:10 , Kieran Jackson

Woah.

Replays of Bottas’ crash shows his front-left tyre simply fail down at turn 1 - and his rear went heavily into the barrier.

Big crash.

Bottas out of the car (Lap 46/71)

21:10 , Kieran Jackson

Bottas is out of the car and into the medical car for a check-up.

As for the field, they head into the pits. Hamilton obviously pitted and dropped to fourth behind Antonelli with what was a pointless pit-stop.

Hamilton: “We’ve got big problems. Big, big problems.”

He’s fuming with his Ferrari team.

RED FLAG (Lap 45/71)

21:07 , Kieran Jackson

Oh wow. Didn’t expect that.

Bottas is moving his head in the cockpit and has given the thumbs-up, but think he’s a bit more hurt then we originally thought.

Hopefully he’s all OK.

SAFETY CAR (Lap 45/71)

21:05 , Kieran Jackson

Valtteri Bottas has crashed at turn 1!

Game-changer.

Hamilton dives into the pits, switches back to softs, but the rest of the frontrunners stay out...

Antonelli had just pitted, so misses out on that key saved time!

Lando Norris pits (Lap 39/71)

21:00 , Kieran Jackson

Norris, from second, pits but it’s slow - six seconds!

He’s now behind George Russell.

Yet Mercedes are very happy with Kimi Antonelli’s pace - they’re keeping him out, though Max Verstappen is now 9.5 seconds behind.

3-10: Leclerc, Hamilton, Norris, Russell, Piastri, Bearman, Lindblad, Hadjar

George Russell pits (Lap 35/71)

20:52 , Kieran Jackson

Russell - with his 10-second penalty - goes from second to seventh after his pit-stop.

Antonelli stays out however...

Antonelli leads (Lap 32/71)

20:48 , Kieran Jackson

For clarity, Antonelli, Russell and Norris occupy the top-three spots - but are yet to pit.

4-10: Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Lindblad, Colapinto, Bearman, Piastri

 (PA)

Max Verstappen's engineer: (Lap 30/71)

20:44 , Kieran Jackson

Engineer: “We basically need one of your magic Mexico stints here, Max. Just do enough to keep him behind.”

His lead over Leclerc is currently 1.5 seconds...

Lewis hamilton pits (Lap 29/71)

20:43 , Kieran Jackson

OK, I’m confused. Hamilton had clean air - but Ferrari have pitted him a lap later!

Hamilton emerges in sixth, behind Verstappen and Leclerc.

Antonelli now leads, but is yet to box.

Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen pit (Lap 28/71)

20:42 , Kieran Jackson

On exactly the same lap, the top-two come in!

And because of Leclerc’s five-second penalty, Verstappen emerges out in front!

Verstappen is now in net-lead - with Hamilton in the lead overall. When will Lewis dive in?

Lewis Hamilton not happy on radio (Lap 24/71)

20:37 , Kieran Jackson

Hamilton: “The stewards have basically handed Charles the win.

“We talked about this in the drivers briefing.”

Leclerc’s lead over Verstappen is now five seconds... the advantage of clean air here is clear.

But... who will blink first and dive into the pits?

Top-10 after 20 laps

Hamilton on penalty (Lap 16/71)

20:26 , Kieran Jackson

Hamilton: “The problem with the five-second penalty is that he's got clean air, he doesn't have to manage like the rest of us.

“He should give the position back.”

A very good point. Leclerc’s lead is already 4.2 seconds.

Verstappen added: “I thought they give 10 seconds for these now...”

Penalties given (Lap 14/71)

20:24 , Kieran Jackson

Stewards have made their call: Charles Leclerc has a five-second penalty for that incident with Lewis Hamilton.

Damaging....

George Russell, meanwhile, has a 10-second penalty for spinning Isack Hadjar (currently third-last) at turn four. That one is definitely deserved.

Car moved, all good.

Leclerc’s lead over Verstappen is 2.3 seconds, with Hamilton under pressure from Antonelli in third-fourth.

VSC called (Lap 7/71)

20:13 , Kieran Jackson

Both Aston Martins are out.

Fernando Alonso has got out of his car in the pits, while Lance Stroll has stopped his car on the edge of the circuit.

Lewis Hamilton on team radio (Lap 5/71)

Hamilton: “What’s happening with Charles?”

Engineer: “Investigation ongoing - we’ll let you know.”

Ferrari are going to let the stewards decide.

Leclerc stays in P1 (Lap 4/71)

20:09 , Kieran Jackson

Leclerc is being told by his Ferrari engineer to keep the lead. Meanwhile, his clash with Hamilton is being investigated by the stewards.

Verstappen could be the biggest beneficiary here. He’s currently 0.8 secs off Leclerc.

Top-10: Leclerc, Verstappen, Hamilton, Antonelli, Russell, Lindblad, Colapinto, Norris, Piastri, Hulkenberg

Lewis Hamilton:

20:06 , Kieran Jackson

“Pushed out by my own teammate.”

Oh dear.

Leclerc is yet to give away the lead - I think he may need to, if he’s to avoid a penalty.

Leclerc in the lead

20:05 , Kieran Jackson

Oh drama between the Ferrari cars!

Hamilton kept the lead at turn one but then Leclerc, who stormed past Russell at the start, took his teammate on at turn 3!

He took first but cut the corner! Leclerc stays in first and Verstappen squeezes past Hamilton for second place.

Russell is down to fifth behind his teammate Antonelli!

Formation lap

20:00 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton leads the pack around then for the formation lap.

All of the top-nine are on softs, but Max Verstappen in fifth has decided to go for something different - he’s on the mediums.

Who will be in the lead coming out of turn 1, I wonder?!

We’re about to find out!

Mexican Grand Prix

19:56 , Kieran Jackson

OK then, so what kind of race will we have tonight?

Lewis Hamilton starts on pole for the first time in Ferrari colours, with George Russell alongside him. Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli lurk behind in third and fourth respectively.

It is a big old run down to turn 1 in Mexico City and we’ve had some drama there in years gone by - will we have some more today?!

A reminder: Antonelli only needs to finish ninth or higher to win the championship today.

 (Reuters)

Lando Norris, who starts sixth and won here last year:

19:54 , Kieran Jackson

“I’ll try and make it a better race car, the pace is there or thereabouts, we’ll see if we can get in a good position on the line.

“Otherwise, it’s a long race - a podium is still our target today.”

Max Verstappen, who will start in fifth:

19:51 , Kieran Jackson

“You always try to have a good start, a long run to turn one, a lot can happen, but still 71 laps - hope we can have a bit of fun.

“Engines and brakes run hot by itself, in traffic also very difficult.”

Kimi Antonelli on his race:

"We are going to try to go for it. We are going to try to get, at least, on the podium. We will see how the start goes and then it is going to be a very tricky race, a very race where we will need to be managing a lot.

“Hopefully we will get a good start and get ahead and hopefully we can achieve a good result and finish the job."

Reconnaissance laps

19:37 , Kieran Jackson

The usual pre-race laps to the grid bring up no issues we know of on what is a perfect day in Mexico City. Blue skies, sun - it’ll be hot, that’s for sure!

Less than 25 minutes now until lights out!

Lewis Hamilton on Antonelli's imminent title:

19:32 , Kieran Jackson

"That's not really something we're thinking of," he said after his pole position. "We're thinking of just trying to score the best result for the team.

"Kimi, he's continued to drive really well and doing what he needs to do. All he has to do is just finish where he is, and he's kind of on his own journey.

"Our journey is to focus on performing the best we can this weekend and holding on to second in the constructors' championship."

How Kimi Antonelli can win 2026 F1 title in Mexico City without even finishing race

19:10 , Kieran Jackson

Antonelli has a 123-point lead over second-placed Russell and a 124-point lead over Hamilton, with 125 points left on the table this season. After this round in Mexico City, there will be 100 points left to play for.

As such, to win the title in Mexico City, Antonelli only needs to finish ninth or higher in Sunday’s race.

Ninth would give him two points and while Russell could win the race and be 100 points behind, the Briton cannot catch the Italian’s race wins tally for the season, which is the tiebreaker if scores are level.

However, even if Antonelli retires or finishes outside the top-10, he could still pick up the title. At a minimum, Russell or Hamilton need to win the grand prix to stretch the title race to Brazil next week.

Lewis Hamilton after claiming pole:

18:45 , Kieran Jackson

“Wow! That felt great, feels good! So happy. I'm lost for words. It's been a challenging weekend, had an engine issue yesterday, we were on the back foot but we did a good job with the set-up but it was so close between us all. To have pole here, don't know if I've had one here before! I think my first pole with Ferrari.”

On how he did it at the age of 41: “When there's a will, there's a way. It's all in the mind for all of us. I ice bath a lot- all those things you can do to keep yourself young and fit but I love what I do, I dream about it.

“These guys keep me going... the support around the world. Hope I can do it for them tomorrow.”

18:15 , Kieran Jackson

Happy? “I am, it's been a tricky few races for me, still struggling to get on top of that car until Q3, almost got pole, congrats to Lewis.

“I know it's in there but the hit rate is too low at the moment but that's the frustration I have. I did a very hard out lap, gave me a bit more confidence.”

Esteban Ocon’s F1 career could be over after shock early axe by Haas in Mexico

18:00 , Kieran Jackson

Esteban Ocon could have raced in Formula 1 for the last time after being axed by Haas for reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Ocon’s contract with Haas expires at the end of the year and he will be replaced by Brazilian driver and current F2 championship leader Rafael Camara for the 2027 season.

However, Ocon, who won the 2021 Hungarian GP with Alpine, was expected to complete the rest of the 2026 campaign alongside Ollie Bearman.

Yet after appearing in second practice on Friday and getting embroiled in a row over tyres with race engineer Laura Muller, Haas released a statement on Saturday confirming that 31-year-old Japanese driver Hirakawa will take Ocon’s place for the rest of the weekend.

Laurent Mekies dismisses Christian Horner’s Red Bull claims over team spirit

17:32 , Kieran Jackson

Laurent Mekies dismissed Christian Horner’s claim that Red Bull have “lost their mojo” since his departure.

“Christian is entitled to his opinion. He obviously spent a lot of time in this team,” Mekies said during this weekend’s race in Mexico City. I respect his point of view. We certainly feel extremely differently about the vibe in the team.

“I think one of the strong points we’ve been drawing on, certainly in the last few months, is the incredible team spirit that has allowed us to come back from an objectively very difficult moment.

“We certainly had a challenging first part of the year, chassis side and power unit side, and the way the team stuck together, the way the team set the Milton Keynes department on fire to try to come back, and the way they have done that… I think that’s the Red Bull spirit.”

PIECE: Why Kimi Antonelli will be F1’s most surprising champion in 17 years

Saturday 31 October 2026 19:45 , Kieran Jackson

Rewinding the clock can prove to be a humbling experience. The ambiguity and anticipation of pre-season guessing games – the inevitable pattern of predictions leading up to day one – can either prove to be a massive feather in the cap come the end of the season (cc. 2025 title prediction) or an article/video to write off.

Yet as this year’s Formula 1 season draws to a close, it is most certainly the latter.

All seven of Sky Sports’ experts? Wrong. BBC pundits? Wrong. Yours truly? Wrong. And not just wrong: barely a soul mentioned Kimi Antonelli above George Russell in the 2026 F1 championship stakes. Some bookies, in and around February testing, had the Italian as low as seventh-favourite.

Ryo Hirakawa in for Esteban Ocon

Saturday 31 October 2026 17:36 , Kieran Jackson

The big news of the day is that Esteban Ocon won’t take part in the rest of the grand prix weekend for Haas.

Instead, his place has been taken by 31-year-old Japanese reserve Ryo Hirakawa. Haas haven’t divulged any more details, but acknowledged that Ocon’s removal wasn’t down to illness.

Ocon is obviously leaving Haas at the end of the season anyway. Have we seen the last of the Frenchman in Formula 1?

Qualifying in Mexico City

Saturday 31 October 2026 17:26 , Kieran Jackson
