George Russell ‘bamboozled’ after damaging F1 qualifying result in Monaco
23:00 , Kieran JacksonGeorge Russell was left “bamboozled” after another dent in his title tussle with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli at the Monaco Grand Prix.
British driver Russell, in his fifth season at Mercedes, was the overwhelming favourite for the world championship at the start of the season but has only claimed one victory, at the season-opener in Australia.
Italian teen sensation Antonelli, meanwhile, has won the last four races and looks to be on his way to a fifth after claiming a sensational pole position around the streets of Monte Carlo, pipping Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton to top spot.
George Russell ‘bamboozled’ after damaging F1 qualifying result in Monaco
Lewis Hamilton after qualifying P3:
22:00 , Kieran Jackson“The most incredible circuit to drive - privilege to do it in a Ferrari.
“We were looking really strong all weekend, we didn’t make any changes overnight, we lost performance in FP3. Mercedes took a step. Our qualifying session wasn’t smooth-sailing, I was really far off in Q1, Q2 - had to make big changes.
“We took performance off the car, took a lot of wing out - on one part I’m still OK with P3 but I wanted P1.”
“How can we get the best start off the line?”
Charles Leclerc after qualifying fourth:
21:00 , Kieran JacksonOn the crash: “It’s the result of the last two weekends being particularly messy. There’s something on my car - the consistency of my car... I overdid it.
“The feeling inside the car is so important - I love this track, it’s my favourite of the season. Being fast is not enough, you need to be confident and know how the car will react, I was getting on the brakes and didn’t know where I’d end up in the corner.
“There’s some damage to the car, not particularly concerned that it will have any impact on tomorrow.”

QUALIFYING REPORT: Kimi Antonelli claims stunning Monaco GP pole ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton
19:00 , Kieran JacksonGeorge Russell’s world championship bid suffered another setback as Kimi Antonelli stormed to pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Antonelli, who has won the last four races, danced his way around Formula One’s famed streets in the principality to beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to top spot by just 0.043 seconds.
Russell will start a distant sixth – 0.394 sec slower than his Mercedes team-mate – with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc third and fourth respectively for Ferrari.
Verstappen’s team-mate Isack Hadjar lines up from fifth with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris set to start McLaren’s 1,000th race from seventh and eighth.
Full report below:
Antonelli claims stunning Monaco GP pole ahead of Verstappen and Hamilton
Lando Norris after qualifying P8:
18:15 , Kieran Jackson“I kind of did. I can’t expect a lot more, I think it’s just clear we’re a long way off - there was more potential in it, it’s just the gap to the others is too extreme - a weekend where we don’t have the confidence in the car, unlike last year.
“Expectations were not high from my side - and they were realistic in the end.”
Toto Wolff on Russell's performance:
17:45 , Kieran Jackson“George is very robust and resilient; a few races went against him. I don’t think it’s the psychological side, he never had the confidence in the car. Once you start to run behind the performance and lose confidence, it’s super difficult to catch up again.
“He didn’t have any grip, Monaco no grip - you have no chance.”
George Russell after finishing sixth in qualifying:
17:22 , Kieran Jackson“No, if I knew I’d be able to not be in that position. Start of the year was easy, last three races it’s just been nowhere. Even Canada was a real fight, but then I nailed it. That was pulling something special out of the hat. That’s where I am right now. Don’t really know.
“There’s definitely some things we’ve seen, with my natural driving style, doesn’t suit it as last year did.
“I don’t want to go into too much detail. Last year suited me just fine, this year suits him very well. It still doesn’t answer why the start of the year was such a breeze.
“I don’t know, bit bamboozled right now.”
Antonelli's engineer, Peter Bonnington:
17:08 , Kieran Jackson“I didn’t think it was on, looking at the time delta, but in those last couple of corners - it came good.
“We try and not focus on the goal, we focus on the process. Not stressing too much, enjoy the journey, focus on climbing each mountain at a time.
“He’s pretty good, a joy to work with. He does continually surprise us.
“When we had him in the TPC cars, it was evident he had talent straight away. It took Kimi about four laps to match the high speed, then you know he has some raw talent. He was a diamond in the rough, he just needed a bit of polishing - second year is always best.”
Lewis Hamilton, after finishing third in qualifying:
16:54 , Kieran JacksonCongrats to Kimi, mega job, getting your first pole here is special. We were looking so strong in practice, barely changed anything but car was drastically different. I was as close to the barriers as I could be - what a privilege to be here, I absolutely loved it.
“It’s very close, jeez I thought we maybe nearly had it. It’s great to see how close all the cars are, I think we lost something going into today and that’s what we need to figure out - but we’re obviously there in the fight.
“I’m really keen to see what updates we bring in the future.”
Max Verstappen after claiming P2:
16:43 , Kieran Jackson“If you told me yesterday to be on the front row, I would have defintiely taken it. Extremely positive, very happy to be on the front row, let’s see at the start - I have two cars behind me which start quite well, this was a good day.
“Once you get a clean lap out of it, it’s very rewarding when it goes well.”
Antonelli on pole
16:35 , Kieran JacksonKimi Antonelli after claiming pole:
16:24 , Kieran Jackson“One of those laps we call the magic lap, was able to put it together, it was such a close qualifying with Max. I knew the last lap was good, just hoping it was enough. Very happy with that.
“This is one of the most intense if not the most intense qualifying of the year, it takes a massive effort. When it’s about finding the last two-tenths, the walls come closer. I have to be honest, I felt great this morning.
“That was a big step compared to last year, looking forward to tomorrow.”

Here we go...
Qualifying in Monaco
14:50 , Kieran JacksonWe’re just 10 minutes away from the most important qualifying session of the year!
Why is it? Well, we all know it’s nigh-on impossible to overtake around the streets of Monte-Carlo, which makes track position so important.
The favourites? Perhaps marginally Kimi Antonelli after his super quick lap in FP3, but Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be right up there in the fight.
Mercedes and Ferrari look a step ahead of McLaren and Red Bull, but it could all change in qualifying!

Leclerc on racing in Monaco:
14:45 , Kieran Jackson"Monaco is actually going to be one of those races where these cars might be very good. First, we have now lighter cars, which is, I think, a good thing and we can definitely feel that. And for a track like Monaco, I think this has its benefits.
"And I think the electric side is going to be a lot less big in Monaco, just because we'll be recharging quite a bit with all the corners that there are. So I'm quite excited for Monaco."
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella on Monaco with these 2026 cars:
14:40 , Kieran Jackson"Monaco, there will be less of the issues that we see in tracks where you are energy starved.
"It should be more normal, and if anything it will be quite a lot of power to drive a Formula 1 car in the streets of Monaco. So, I think different challenges in terms of having to harness so much power for the tyres, for the car itself and for the drivers.
"So, it should be an interesting one."
Kim Kardashian in Monaco to support Lewis Hamilton
14:35 , Kieran JacksonIt’s the first time that Kardashian has been in the F1 paddock supporting Hamilton, since their relationship first emerged at the start of the year.
Can the Ferrari driver claim pole position in front of his girlfriend?

George Russell after Friday practice:
14:10 , Kieran Jackson“We expected Ferrari to be the guys to beat and clearly they are, Red Bull have also been a surprise.
“We knew this would be our most challenging. I don’t think we nailed it today - definitely Ferrari are the team.
“The trends that we see with Ferrari here every year and street tracks... been there for 10 years. Every car has an inherent DNA, and theirs works on street tracks.”
Leclerc reveals he had other offers on table before penning Ferrari deal
13:50 , Kieran Jackson"There were, yes," he said of rival bids. "I’m not going to say who — they can say it if they want. For me, Ferrari was always the choice."
He added that assurances about Ferrari's future competitiveness were "part of all the discussions."
Leclerc elaborated on his loyalty, stating: "But winning in red for me has got a very unique feeling, and something that I’ve dedicated all the years. We didn’t manage to achieve that yet, at least in a full season."
Lando Norris on Thursday on Ferrari's potential pace:
13:40 , Kieran Jackson"It's true that the Ferraris are not the quickest on the straights, but that's also because they have a lot of downforce and a lot of drag.
"So it's kind of their own punishment they give themselves, which gives them some advantage. That advantage will definitely show this weekend."
Damon Hill on qualifying
13:30 , Kieran Jackson“I think qualifying is going to be very tight but I think Kimi Antonelli looks very confident; he's not made a mistake.
“This is one of the places building up to the final runs and actual qualifying itself, he's kept his nose clean and done a fantastic job. It's going to be tough for team-mate George Russell.
“I think the Ferraris are really interesting; will it be Lewis Hamilton's opportunity to get his car on the front row? I think he'll be going ino this session thinking he can.”
Speaking on BBC Radio
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff after FP3:
13:10 , Kieran Jackson“A good session for Kimi, fast. Just need to build for qualifying - it won’t be a walk in the park but we are very positively surprised.
“It’s the next phase of his development, we’ve built the confidence without the pressure. It’s important for the team but we let his talent flourish.”

Final hour before the competition really starts...
Leclerc after Friday practice:
11:21 , Kieran Jackson“We are facing quite a few issues on brakes, the confidence is not at the highest level, but it’s a track I love and if we fix those, it’ll be a good step forward. We are trying to find solutions for tomorrow.
“We are working towards making the situation better, we didn’t find a clear solution so far - I hope we can for tomorrow.”
Kimi Antonelli on his 43-point lead:
11:15 , Kieran Jackson"I don't feel that much pressure. I feel pretty relaxed. I just keep doing what I'm doing, trying to raise the bar.
"George is a super-strong team-mate and he will make my life difficult."
NEW: Fred Vasseur hospitalised
10:23 , Kieran JacksonFerrari team principal Fred Vasseur has been hospitalised and will miss qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday.
The 58-year-old Frenchman was present trackside on Friday – when his drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc earned one-two finishes in both practice sessions – and participated in media duties.
However, the team released a statement on Saturday morning to say that “following some medical checks,” Vasseur will remain under observation at a medical facility. No specific medical reason was disclosed.

Lewis Hamilton on his weekend ahead:
Friday 5 June 2026 20:00 , Kieran Jackson"This track would probably bode better for us than some of the others. The long straights, we lost quite a lot of time, so obviously here we would lose a lot less and I don't think power is going to be necessarily so much of an issue.
“And our car is good in low speeds so I think we'll be competitive.
"I don't think we'll necessarily be the quickest, especially because after the Mercedes upgrade at the last track they were quite quick through the low speeds. But I think we'll be competitive."
