Max Verstappen started on pole position after getting the better of both of McLaren’s championship-chasers in qualifying, with Lando Norris - who emerged victorious in Saturday’s sprint event - starting second on the grid.

Norris was pushed off the track soon after lights out, with Verstappen jostling at the front of the pack with Piastri before the Aussie pulled away. He only extended his advantage over the Dutchman for the remainder, crossing the line first and holding off a late resurgence from Norris, who took second.

Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating race with teammate Charles Leclerc in toe, having started all the way back in 12th after a dismal qualifying session. The Brit finished eighth, behind his Ferrari colleague after being ordered to let the Monaco driver chase Kimi Antonelli at the back-end of the race - with tensions flaring between the seven-time champion and the team.

Lewis Hamilton will not ‘apologise for being a fighter’ after Miami issues

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton said he will refuse to “apologise for being a fighter” as he defended his “PG” radio spat with Ferrari at the Miami Grand Prix.

Hamilton accused his team of having “a tea break” as they decided whether Charles Leclerc should be moved out of his way while they were running in seventh and eighth.

Ferrari ushered Leclerc aside, but when Hamilton failed to make any impression on his Mercedes’ replacement Kimi Antonelli ahead, the two drivers were ordered to trade positions again with four laps left.

F1 Academy is growing in relevance, says Aston Martin’s Jessica Hawkins

11:30

,

Olivia Hicks

When Jessica Hawkins became the first woman in five years to test a modern Formula 1 car in 2023, her status as a role model in the sport was only beginning.

Hawkins was one of 32 women who drove across the W Series racing competition from 2019 to 2022. Once the motorsport series shuttered and Hawkins moved onto stunt driving and sports car racing, she became a vital link between F1 and F1 Academy, the all-female junior series.

When F1 announced all 10 teams would back an F1 Academy team following the series’ inaugural season in 2023, what that partnership would look like beyond a car logo or driver kit became hazy.

But Hawkins represents exactly how teams like Aston Martin support the feeder series designed to develop female racing talent. Last year, she joined as the team’s head of F1 Academy, an expanded version of her previous role supporting driver Tina Hausmann.

Lewis Hamilton suggests team orders spat shows 'fire in his belly'

10:30

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton has suggested that his spat with Ferrari during the Miami Grand Prix is indicative of the competitive spirit the seven-time world champion still has.

Hamilton clashed with his team over the radio during the race as a difficult start to the season continued, and admits improvements must be made.

"I've still got my fire in my belly,” Hamilton explained afterwards. “I could feel a bit of it really coming up there.

"I'm not going to apologise for being a fighter. I'm not going to apologise for still wanting it. I know everyone in the team does, too.

"I didn't think the decision came quick enough. And for sure, in that time you're like, 'Come on!' But that's really kind of it.

"I have no problems with the team or with Charles. I think we could do better. But the car is not where we really need to be. Ultimately we're fighting for seventh and eighth."

Oscar Piastri dominates Miami GP as Lewis Hamilton fumes over Ferrari race management

09:30

,

Olivia Hicks in Miami

Oscar Piastri crossed the chequered flag in south Florida on Sunday 4.6 seconds ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Mercedes driver and third-place finisher George Russell was 37.6 seconds behind in a race where the virtual safety car played a significant role in the 2025 Miami Grand Prix.

Piastri, who qualified in fourth on Saturday, gained an advantage when a first-corner tussle between pole-sitter Max Verstappen and Norris had the latter falling down the leaderboard into sixth place. The McLaren driver, who secured his maiden win in Miami last year, unsuccessfully attempted to appeal to the stewards, claiming the four-time world champion pushed him off as Verstappen swept across the start.

Lewis Hamilton explains ‘sarcastic’ comments after row with Ferrari over radio during Miami Grand Prix

08:30

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton turned on the sarcasm to show his frustration with Ferrari in radio exchanges during the Miami Grand Prix.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion told the Italian team to "have a tea-break while you're at it" after the pit wall finally confirmed teammate Charles Leclerc would let him through.

"This is not good team work, that's all I'm going to say," he had said earlier, complaining he was just "burning up my tyres" in the dirty air behind the Monegasque.

"So you want me to just sit here (behind Leclerc) the whole race?" he said as the team informed him of the gap to Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli ahead of Leclerc without giving any instruction on passing.

Former boss Toto Wolff insists Lewis Hamilton has not lost any of his magic

Lewis Hamilton’s former boss Toto Wolff insisted the Ferrari driver has not lost any of his magic and backed him to recapture his form.

“We have seen that magic in the sprint race in Shanghai. He dominated that race, and it is not like you have that magic in one race, and then suddenly you lose it in the following one,” said Wolff ahead of Sunday’s Miami GP.

“I very much believe it is still there. If he aligns his performance contributors, is in the right space, and the car is to his liking, he will be stellar, and I have no doubt about that.”

“I don’t believe so much in momentum. Clearly I have made some mistakes, and not been at the level I need to be at. But I believe I can get there soon enough.”

The 10-year extension, with the previous deal expiring in 2031, was announced on Friday ahead of the 2025 event starting at the Miami International Autodrome.

F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver

03:00

,

Flo Clifford

F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season.

Mexico City’s previous deal with the sport expired after this year’s race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year’s grid.

But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era.

Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season.

Charles Leclerc says 'no bad feelings' with Lewis Hamilton

02:30

,

Will Castle

"There's no bad feelings with Lewis, not at all,” Leclerc reassured.

“Most of the time I say something, today I don’t think I’ll say anything.”

“I think the story is going to be big enough already. We need to do better, that’s for sure. Today was not ideal and was far from maximising our potential, but we’ve got to regroup as a team and be better.”

“I think we should have discussed a little bit more before doing the swap, because you’re trying to go to the end with those tyres.”

"Max put up a good fight as always and I paid the price, but it's the way it is,” Norris said on the early incident that saw him bumped off the track.

"What can I say? If I don't go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain, so you can't win.

"But it is the way it is with Max, it's crash or don't pass.

"Unless you get it really right and you put him in the perfect position, then you can just about get there. I paid the price for not doing a good enough job today, but I'm still happy with second."

Post-race thoughts from Piastri

Sunday 4 May 2025 23:10

,

Will Castle

"Yesterday was a tricky day,” he said. “Qualifying was one of my trickiest sessions of the year so to come away and win is an impressive result.

"A bit of argy-bargy at Turn 1 which helped me a bit. I was aware enough to avoid Max coming through in Turn 1.

"From that point onwards I knew I had a good pace advantage and clearly the car was unbelievable.

"The first stint was really strong. The hard stint, I was struggling a bit, so it was a good thing I built that gap in the first stint.

"Towards the end I started to get things a bit more under control, so there's still definitely some things to work on. Very happy with the win, very happy with the points.

"Constantly got to keep learning. Very happy to leave Miami on top."
