George Russell kept Max Verstappen at bay to land an impressive pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix.

In his rejuvenated Mercedes machinery, Russell danced his way to top spot to see off Verstappen by 0.182 seconds at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Verstappen was unable to live with Russell, but he delivered a world title statement of intent by out-qualifying championship leader Oscar Piastri and McLaren team-mate Lando Norris. Piastri will line up from third, two places clear of a disappointed Norris, who faces losing further ground to the Australian.

Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli splits the McLaren drivers and will start from fourth, nearly four tenths slower than the pole-sitter. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc qualified sixth and seventh respectively for Ferrari.

On weather: “It’s unpredictable here, it’ll dry up pretty quick.”

On race start: “In dry conditions, I’m not expecting anything to happen, but it could be an interesting start like 2017. It’ll make it a longer race.

“I think we’re in for a really good chance, it’ll be around the pit-stops, whoever makes that decision on the perfect lap.”

EXCLUSIVE - Liam Lawson on F1 revival: ‘I was naive at Red Bull – but my goal is still the same’

By Kieran Jackson

The dust of ruthlessness had barely settled for 24 hours before Liam Lawson made his feelings known. Brutally ousted from Red Bull after two races this season – the shortest ever stint in a full-time Formula One seat – the New Zealander posted on Instagram a drawing from his childhood, depicting him as an F1 driver decked in blue. “It’s what I’ve worked towards my whole life,” the caption read.

Only the most unsympathetic of observers could not have felt a dose of compassion. But now, for the first time in his disorderly F1 career, the 23-year-old is settled. In fact, Lawson is in the midst of a fine stretch of form for Red Bull’s sister team, Racing Bulls, and comes into this weekend in Singapore off the back of a career-best fifth place in Azerbaijan last time out. The only question now, with a 2026 seat far from certain, is: how long will that last?

On illness: “Last place you want to feel a bit ill. I was struggling a little bit, it hit me pretty quickly but it went away – I;m not optimal but no excuses for today.

On qualifying: “Mercedes are doing a very good job, Singapore has always been a bit of a weird one, we’ve been struggling with the front tyres, every time someone struggles with front tyres, Mercedes is usually the team that comes out on top. The front of the car hasn’t been strong enough, then you have to make compromises.

“Making improvements is the thing we have to work on, we’re trying to win the constructors’ this weekend and it feels disappointing when you’re not quick enough. You feel too slow, haven’t done a good enough job.

On prospect of win on Sunday: “I think you’re asking for a lot, I’m sure I’ll go back to my room and we’ll ask ourselves the same question, there’s always chances in the race but not many, it’s about getting to third or second. A lot of work to do tomorrow.”

Kimi Antonelli after qualifying in fourth:

Kieran Jackson

“I like to make my life harder, I felt I had a real shot for front-row - the car was there and we had the pace.

“In Q3, I let my emotion took over.

“I’m a bit more relaxed in the car overall, focusing more on the process, today’s Q3 was another big learning for the future, sometimes doing less brings in more. In Q3, I went beyond the car’s potential - was asking too much.”

Lewis Hamilton, after qualifying sixth:

11:35

,

Kieran Jackson

On this weekend: “I’ve enjoyed it, have felt on it all weekend and felt good with the car. It was maybe silly of me but I thought we were fighting for top positions.

“But the way the plan goes, where we are in the pit-lane, using tyre temperature, all these different sessions mean we don’t optimise the session. We have to do some work.

On fixing those issues: “We’ll talk in the background, just have to have a conversation about it – everyone is working as hard as they can and we should look at what the others are doing, Meredes were out first

“When I got to Q3, I lost performance in the tyres.”

Bernie Ecclestone shrugs off Felipe Massa’s legal case over Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 F1 title

04:00

,

Kieran Jackson

Bernie Ecclestone has dismissed Felipe Massa’s legal case over the 2008 Crashgate scandal, with the former F1 supremo insisting: “There is no way in the world anyone could change or cancel that race.”

Ex-F1 driver Massa is seeking £60m in damages from F1, the FIA and Ecclestone over an alleged cover-up of the scandal at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, when Nelson Piquet Jnr crashed deliberately under instruction from his Renault team.

The subsequent impact of the crash, Massa argues, cost him the 2008 F1 world championship, which Lewis Hamilton claimed on the final lap of the final race in Brazil, with Ferrari star Massa missing out by one point.

Having filed suit in London’s High Court last March, an initial court date has now been set for 28 October.

NEW: Sainz and Albon set to be disqualified

Saturday 4 October 2025 16:03

Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon's rear wings have fallen foul of an FIA inspection.

This could see Sainz (P13) and Albon (P12) get disqualified.

“Amazing to be on pole, yesterday was very challenging but good to come back and get a result. A long sweaty race tomorrow. Very happy to be on pole.

F1 issues first-ever ‘heat hazard’ warning for Singapore Grand Prix

Saturday 4 October 2025 13:25

,

Kieran Jackson

F1’s governing body have issued a first-ever “heat hazard” warning for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

With temperatures set to reach a humid 31C in the city-state, new regulations this year state that drivers may fit a cooling device to their cars if they so wish.

The cooling system pumps liquid around a series of tubes but it is not mandatory, with ballast being added to cars for drivers who opt not to use the device, in order for every car in the field to be equal in weight.

Oscar Piastri looks ahead to Singapore:

Saturday 4 October 2025 12:44

,

Kieran Jackson

"I think even without disregarding who won the race, I think we don't want to have weekends like Baku. And we know we can't afford to have weekends like Baku.

"Certainly from my side of things, there was some tough lessons to take, but I think as a team, we kind of recognised a few opportunities from the weekend to try and improve.

"So that's always an important thing. I'm not that fussed with kind of what the championship picture looks like.”
