In the early morning of May 17 2024, the nation was struck by tragedy when an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station resulted in the deaths of two policemen. The suspect was fatally shot during the incident. Additionally, two university students—a 22-year-old male and a 21-year-old female—were arrested in connection with the attack. According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, the arrests were made because it seemed illogical to report a molestation case from two years ago at 2:30 a.m.
Here is a short chronology of the incident to keep you up to speed on what happened during the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station.
17th of May 2024
- 2:30 a.m.: Two college students, a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, arrived at the Ulu Tiram police station to file a report regarding an alleged molestation incident that occurred two years ago.
- 2:35 a.m.: While the students were making their report, a suspect entered the police station area on a motorcycle and proceeded to the back of the station.
- :A policeman went to the back of the station to investigate but was attacked and killed by the suspect, who then seized his firearm.
- :Two other policemen, alerted by the attack, rushed to the back of the station and engaged in a shootout with the suspect.
- 2:54 a.m.: During the shootout, one of the policemen was shot in the cheek and killed. Despite being injured, the other policeman managed to shoot and kill the suspect.
The two policemen killed in the incident were Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24. Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi was laid to rest in the Kampung Poh Muslim Cemetery near Bidor, while his colleague, Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, was laid to rest in the Batu 8 Muslim Cemetery in Gambang, Pahang. Their respective families mourn the loss of their beloved family members.

The suspect fatally shot in the Ulu Tiram incident was initially believed to be a member of Jemaah Islamiah. However, as of May 19, 2024, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain clarified that the suspect himself was not a member, but his father was associated with the group. Tan Sri Razarudin Husain described the perpetrator as a ‘lone wolf’ who acted alone. The motive for the attack is still under investigation by the police.
Despite the tragedy that unfolded and the clarification that the suspect acted alone, one Facebook user blamed the incident on 'kafirs' (non-Muslims) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP). This baseless accusation stands in stark contrast to the police statement, which emphasized that the suspect acted alone and had no political affiliations.
The Facebook user commented the following on an article by Siakap Keli on the Ulu Tiram attack, “Maybe he was angry and held a grudge against the police because many cases favor Chinese kafir (non-believers) and the DAP. When Chinese people are involved, they often get away with it, while Malays always get caught... If this is allowed to continue, many more organizations will emerge.”.

To the Facebook user who made this comment, I have a question: What relevance do 'kafirs' and the DAP have to this incident? You mentioned that “many cases favor Chinese kafir (non-believers) and the DAP.” Could you clarify which cases you are referring to? The attack on the Ulu Tiram police station was not linked to any political parties, as far as the authorities are concerned. The suspect acted alone, driven by motives that are still under investigation. Blaming 'kafirs' and the DAP not only diverts attention from the true nature of the incident but also perpetuates division and spreads misinformation.
The tragic events at the Ulu Tiram police station on May 17, 2024, have left a profound impact on the nation. While we mourn the loss of Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, it's crucial to address the facts surrounding the incident. Despite initial speculations, investigations have revealed that the suspect acted alone, detached from any political or religious affiliations. It's disheartening to witness baseless accusations surfacing, such as those targeting 'kafirs' and the Democratic Action Party (DAP). Such unfounded claims only serve to distract from the true nature of the tragedy and sow seeds of discord in our society. Let us unite in seeking justice and supporting the families of the fallen officers, while rejecting divisive narratives that undermine our collective understanding of events.
