DC Abhishek Meena and SP Hemendra Kumar Meena take a stock of the situation at the Bawal industrial unit.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out at the industrial site in Sector 5 of Bawal where a massive fire broke out on Tuesday.

Rewari Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Meena and district Superintendent of Police Hemendra Kumar Meena inspected the site to assess the situation on Wednesay.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire engines from several neighbouring districts were pressed into service in view of the gravity of the situation.

“The operation continued throughout the night and the fire was brought under control,” said the SP, adding that police force was also deployed at the site.

Six persons were safely rescued from the factory on fire. They were immediately hospitalised and were undergoing treatment for the burn injuries.

A person was reported to be missing since the fire incident and a case has been registered in this regard.

“The police-administration’s first and foremost priority is to conduct the relief, rescue and search operations. Immediately thereafter, a thorough investigation will be conducted into the entire incident and strict legal action taken in case negligence is found in safety standards on the part of the company management or at any other level,” the SP said.

Meanwhile, another fire incident was reported from a unit of electric scooters at a village in the Dharuhera area of Rewari district later in the day.

No casualty was reported in the incident, but goods and material stored at the unit were gutted.

Meanwhile, labour union CITU has sought adequate compensation and complete treatment of the workers injured in the fire at the factory in Bawal.

The labour union has also demanded a high-level inquiry into the fire incident and strict action against those found guilty of negligence.

Describing the accident as tragic, CITU state vice-presidents Satbir Singh and Vinod Kumar, district coordinator Ram Chander and coordinator Ramkumar stated that this was not an isolated incident.

“Similar incidents are taking place frequently in various industrial areas of Haryana. Numerous such cases have revealed that the primary cause behind these accidents is the blatant disregard for safety standards at the industrial units,” they maintained.

The labour leaders lamented that the authorities concerned have remained negligent in ensuring the maintenance of safety standards, due to which workers lose their lives in such accidents.

“Abolishing labor laws and imposing four labor codes in the name of ‘ease of doing business’ will give the employers a leeway in enforcing safety standards at the workplace.
