With the arrest of two accused, the Sonepat police have busted an extortion gang, which was allegedly involved in demanding an extortion sum of Rs one crore from a person in the name of a notorious gangster sitting abroad.

ACP Devender Singh said that the arrested accused has been identified as Nakul of Sheikhpura Titri village, presently living in Rohtak’s Sector 4, while his associate has been identified as Rahul of Farmana village in Rohtak, residing in Vishal Nagar.

The ACP said that Rohit, a resident of Mahra village in Baroda area, in his complaint to the Baroda police said that he along with his brother were living in America. He came to India on April 8 after three years and was using an American mobile number, which also had WhatsApp.

Rohit received the extortion call on May 2. The caller posed himself as a member of the Rohit Godara gang and demanded Rs one crore extortion from him.

He also threatened Rohit with dire consequences if he refused to give the said amount.

Following the complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS.

A police team led by ASI Kuldeep, in-charge, Bhainswan Khurd nabbed the two accused Nakul and Rahul from Mahra village and produced them before the court.

ACP Singh said,” The accused Rahul and Nakul were friends, and Nakul was a relative of the victim Rohit. They both knew that Rohit possessed money since was returning from the United States. Nakul demanded the extortion sum via WhatsApp calls, using a foreign number.”

“It was revealed that one of Nakul’s friends was in Thailand. The accused logged into WhatsApp using his friend’s number and began making calls in an attempt to mislead the police”, the ACP added.

“The accused have no connection with the notorious Rohit Godara gang, as the two were just using the gangster’s name to exert pressure on the victim, the ACP asserted. The court has sent them to judicial custody,” said Singh.
