Italdesign, the Italian design house behind some of the automotive industry’s most recognizable vehicles, has officially changed hands, with AI and technology transformation company UST completing the acquisition of a majority stake from the Audi Group. The deal is set combines Italdesign’s design and engineering expertise with UST’s capabilities in automotive engineering, AI, software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and digital ecosystem design.
Italdesign Is Now Under UST
The sale comes as the automotive industry continues its shift toward software-defined, AI-enabled and increasingly connected vehicles, a shift UST said made the timing of the deal significant. By bringing Italdesign’s design and engineering legacy under the umbrella of a company built around AI, automotive engineering and digital ecosystem design, the two companies said they aim to help manufacturers manage the growing complexity of next-generation mobility, accelerating development from initial concept through to production.
Founded in 1968, Italdesign built its reputation on a combination of design creativity and engineering precision, contributing to some of the world’s most recognizable vehicles over the years – including the original VW Golf, BMW M1, Lotus Espirit, DeLorean DMC-12, Lamborghini Cala concept, VW W12 supercar concept, Lambo Gallardo, Maserati MC12, and even the 50th anniversary rendition of the Nissan GT-R. And yes, they’re responsible for the Honda NSX Tribute too (see below).
UST CFO Vijay Padmanabhan said: “We invested [Italdesign] because of its people, its heritage, and its extraordinary reputation for turning bold ideas into world-class products.” He believes the combination of both brands will “help shape the future of mobility.” COO Gilroy Mathew said UST’s customers “increasingly need partners who can connect design, engineering, software, and AI,” and the new acquisition aims to “move from concept to production faster while preserving the creativity and engineering excellence that define great products.”
For Italdesign’s part, the brand isn’t going anywhere. “We bring nearly 60 years of experience and a unique credibility in the global automotive industry to this partnership. We will continue to operate as Italdesign, with our values and distinctive competencies, based on a holistic and multidisciplinary approach and an increasing focus on sustainability, while benefiting from UST’s global scale, digital engineering expertise, AI capabilities, and global client relationships,” said Italdesign CEO Antonio Casu.
