The car industry’s growing shift towards AI and software is bringing technology and design even closer together. UST, a US-based AI and technology company, has completed its purchase of a majority stake in Italdesign, the near-60-year-old Italian design house, buying it from the Audi Group.
At its heart, the deal is a bet on where cars are heading. Vehicles are becoming more software-defined, connected and AI-driven, which is reshaping the mix of skills needed to build them. UST’s view is that bolting its AI, software and digital engineering onto Italdesign’s design and engineering heritage can help carmakers keep pace and get from idea to finished product faster.
Italdesign brings real pedigree to that side of things. Based near Turin, it has spent almost six decades designing some of the world’s best-known cars, and today runs a team of more than 1,300 across ten sites. Its work stretches past the automotive world as well, with over 1,000 industrial design projects to its name and newer ventures into aerospace and robotics.
UST, meanwhile, is framing the acquisition as being as much about people as capability.

Should you be attached to the Italdesign name, there’s no need to worry about it fading away. The firm will keep operating under its own banner and hold on to its way of working, while drawing on UST’s global reach and AI resources. Given that UST has been around since 1999 and employs over 30,000 people across more than 30 countries, the tie-up hands Italdesign extra scale while giving UST a genuine foothold in high-end automotive design.
