THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) extended help to the family of a student stabbed in a school in Las Piñas City on Friday.
Police said a 14-year-old Grade 9 learner fatally stabbed his 13-year-old classmate in a confrontation at Las Piñas National High School.
“The whole DSWD leadership condoles with the family of the student who died. The agency immediately provided psychosocial intervention and initial financial assistance to the bereaved family of the victim,” Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, DSWD spokesman, said on Sunday.
DSWD-National Capital Region provided P20,000 cash aid and two boxes of family food packs while the Las Piñas city government provided burial assistance, the department said in a statement.
“We urge the public to be responsible and avoid spreading any unverified information on social media about cases of children in conflict with the law. Posting unverified information and sensitive content in these cases may only bring additional trauma to the victims and their families, or influence the investigation being conducted by the authorities,” Dumlao said in Filipino and English.
The DSWD said it and its attached agency, the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council, “will continue monitoring the case and ensure that appropriate protocols on handling CICL are in place.” “We will ensure that the legal and administrative processes in handling cases that have something to do with CICLs are strictly followed,” Dumlao said.
Condolences
The Department of Education (DepEd) on Sunday expressed grief over the death of a student from Las Piñas National High School, extending its condolences to the family and the school community while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety of schools.
DepEd described the loss as “heartbreaking” and stressed that schools should remain safe spaces for learners.
“Schools must be safe sanctuaries. Violence on our campus is unacceptable and demands accountability and collective action,” the department said in a statement.
DepEd said it is extending full support to the victim’s family and has deployed trauma counseling services for affected learners and school personnel.
The department also said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities and has initiated a comprehensive review of campus security protocols in response to the incident.
“Protecting our youth requires a united effort among schools, families, communities, and law enforcement,” DepEd said, adding that it remains committed to restoring and upholding schools as safe spaces for every child.
