The family spokesperson, S Dayalan, revealed that a Year 5 student, who endured a heatstroke allegedly caused by being instructed to stand under the scorching sun as punishment, has been evaluated by Ampang Hospital and classified as a person with disabilities (OKU). The boy's parents were informed by a doctor that he would be unable to resume school due to a nerve condition stemming from the heatstroke incident.
During a press conference, Dayalan conveyed that the parents have initiated the process to obtain an OKU card for their son by completing a form provided by the hospital. They have an upcoming appointment with a doctor to finalize the documentation, which will then be submitted to the social welfare department for card issuance.
Expressing disappointment, Dayalan criticized the school's headmaster for reprimanding the student with three warning letters during his absence for medical treatment. The parents, accompanied by their lawyer, Dinesh Muthal, shared their distress at the press conference. Mogahana Selvi, the mother, lamented the noticeable change in her son's behavior, highlighting his withdrawal from family activities and persistent mumbling.
Recalling the incident, it was reported earlier that the boy was subjected to punishment under the sun on April 30, resulting in his distress and subsequent hospitalization. His mother noticed his discomfort upon returning home, leading to an emergency visit to the hospital where he collapsed.
Mogahana recounted her son's account of the punishment, stating that it was in response to him reporting a classmate throwing a water bottle at him.
Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail confirmed the conclusion of the police investigation, acknowledging the boy's heat exhaustion. The case has been forwarded to the public prosecutor's office for further action.
However, Dayalan raised concerns regarding the speed of the investigation and claimed to have reported the matter to the Bukit Aman integrity and standards compliance department. He also criticized the lack of consequences for the teacher involved, citing the individual's status as a public servant.
In response to the ordeal, the family plans to pursue legal action against the school. Dinesh expressed frustration over the delay in addressing the incident, comparing it unfavorably to other cases with more expeditious outcomes.
The family's plea for accountability and justice underscores the need for swift action and heightened awareness of student welfare within educational institutions.
