The celebration of our country's Independence or Merdeka Day on 31st August every year is more than merely hoisting the national flag, Jalur Gemilang up high or parading together on the street. It is a moral responsibility and it demonstrates a sense of pride of being a loyal and committed Malaysian, regardless of race, social class, religion, and political stand.

For Malaysians, it is a time to reflect and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the past leaders in achieving this highly valued independence. For foreigners, it's time to enjoy a colourful celebration. Other than the Government's sponsored Merdeka Month programs to commemorate the significant & historic occasion, every family should find time to celebrate.

In this context, my wife, Zarina and I together with our 4 children and their spouses took the opportunity to engage with our 5 grandchildren over family outing in celebrating Merdeka Month. It is simply to instil patriotism and love for the nation in children that can help them develop a strong emotional connection to our country & cultivate a sense of belongingness.

As a longtime Chairman of Parent Teachers Association (PIBG), I noticed kindergarten and primary school are the most transformative time of a person's life. My own experience has been filled with more memories, laughters, stress, and most importantly, growth than I ever could have anticipated when I grew up. The lessons I have learned about myself, my family, about others, my country & the world in my childhood years have shaped who I am today.

In conversation with my grandchildren aged 4-12 years old, I used pedagogy of storytelling that can help engage and develop their imagination & creativity, foster understanding about the history behind Merdeka Day, and stories of our national leaders & heroes. Concurrently, I encouraged them to ask questions as a powerful tool for their critical thinking and empathy.
