A true story of desire, ambition and power, brought to life by a first-rate cast. With Julianne Moore as a formidable strategist, Mary & George delves behind the scenes of an English court where the king’s favour can alter a person’s fate. Elegant, daring and often biting, the miniseries is well worth rediscovering.
Released in 2024 on Sky Atlantic, the British miniseries Mary & George is inspired by the book The King’s Assassin by Benjamin Woolley, and stars Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine in the leading roles. The story shows how a family’s ambition can upend the entire political balance of a kingdom.

A true story worthy of a novel
At the beginning of the 17th century, Mary Villiers, a widow determined to rise in society, realises that her son George possesses rare qualities—beauty, intelligence and undeniable charisma. She sends him to be educated in France, then carefully orchestrates his introduction to the court of King James I.
The plan succeeds beyond all expectations. George quickly becomes the monarch’s favourite, gaining titles, influence and wealth, eventually becoming the Duke of Buckingham. Behind this meteoric rise, the series chiefly portrays a machinery of power in which everyone is striving to survive.
Julianne Moore at her finest
Julianne Moore delivers a captivating Mary Villiers—calculating, clear-sighted, and often more dangerous than those she faces. Her performance lends the character a rare intensity.
Opposite her, Nicholas Galitzine confirms his ease in complex roles following Red, White & Royal Blue (2023). Tony Curran, meanwhile, portrays a vulnerable, unpredictable and deeply human King James I.
A distinctly modern historical series
Beneath its sumptuous costumes, Mary & George ultimately explores very contemporary themes: image, seduction as a political tool, corruption, and the making of elites. Its brisk pacing and polished direction set it apart from the static, conventional period drama.
The result is a sharp, sensual, and at times cruel fresco that reminds us royal courts have never been short of power games.
