A 52-year-old farmer was fatally shot outside an unoccupied rented house in Teluk Bunut, Banting. Police have arrested a man to assist investigations.
SHAH ALAM: A 52-year-old farmer was fatally shot outside an unoccupied house in Teluk Bunut, Banting, on Sept 8.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the victim was believed to have gone to check the condition of the house, which was rented by his child.
He said a Malaysian man in his 20s or 30s was arrested in the Banting area around Sept 9 and remanded for two days today to assist investigations.
However, police have yet to determine whether the detainee is the main suspect.
“We have not determined whether the individual arrested is the main suspect or otherwise.
“Hopefully, this arrest will help the investigation,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters here today.
The arrest was made by a team from the Selangor police contingent and the Kuala Langat district police headquarters.
Shazeli said the shooting was believed to have occurred between 10.30pm and 11pm, with police receiving information about the incident between 11pm and 11.30pm.
He clarified that the house where the shooting occurred was not the victim’s residence.
“It was a house rented by the deceased’s child but was unoccupied. The deceased was believed to have come to check the condition of the house,” he said.
The victim was involved in farming activities in Banting.
Shazeli said the lack of eyewitnesses to the late-night shooting had made it difficult for investigators to establish the motive and identify those involved.
“The motive has yet to be determined because there were no eyewitnesses and the incident happened late at night,” he said.
He said investigators were pursuing several leads but declined to elaborate as the information had yet to be firmly established.
No weapon had been recovered, while police were awaiting the post-mortem report before disclosing the precise injuries sustained by the victim.
Shazeli said investigators were also checking the occupation of the detained man.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
