KULIM - A father of two was sentenced to seven days in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here after pleading guilty to stealing several household items from a supermarket last week.
Magistrate Nur Hamizah Mat Shah handed down the sentence against Muhamad Zani Ishak, 49, following his guilty plea after the charge was read to him.
According to the charge sheet, Muhamad Zani stole two 1.8-kilogram packs of Milo powder, four 900-gram packs of Milo powder, and eight bottles of shampoo, with a total value of RM252.60.
He committed the offence at a supermarket here at around 10.52am on July 15.
The accused was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of up to 10 years and a fine. For a second or subsequent offence, offenders face imprisonment alongside a fine or whipping.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Preeyaa, while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Nur Najihah Ahmad Zulkarnain.
In mitigation, the defense counsel pleaded for a lenient sentence, informing the court that her client was actively seeking employment. She added that the accused expressed remorse for his actions and claimed the stolen items were basic necessities.
However, the prosecution pressed for an appropriate sentence, arguing that the accused had stolen the items to resell them for cash.
The court subsequently ordered the accused to serve a seven day jail sentence effective from the date of his arrest.
