TAWAU: Police arrested a female university student who allegedly made a seditious speech during the “Himpunan Solidarity Justice For Zara” rally at Batu 4, Jalan Apas, here, Tuesday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 23-year-old, who is in her third semester of study, was taken into custody around 12.30pm.
He said the arrest followed the lodging of 14 police reports regarding the woman’s speech, which was said to have touched on the position of Head of State Tun Musa Aman.
“Preliminary investigations found that the woman was among those given the opportunity to speak during the rally. Her speech allegedly contained seditious elements against the Head of State and caused public anxiety,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Jasmin said police have also summoned several other witnesses to assist with the investigation and assured that the probe will be conducted transparently and in accordance with legal procedures.
Meanwhile, Parti Warisan has lodged a report over what it described as a deliberate attempt to smear the party through a viral TikTok video linking it to a controversial remark made at a Tawau gathering.
Warisan Secretary-General Datuk Loretto Padua Jr filed the report at the Penampang Police Station, saying the video amounted to false allegations aimed at damaging the party’s credibility and reputation.
The clip, lasting 1 minute 31 seconds, was uploaded by a man using the account @JP\_SSBJ, who identified himself as JP. It showed a woman speaking at the “Justice for Zara” event in Tawau.
Loretto said the uploader had deliberately connected the woman to Warisan, suggesting the party supported the statement.
