Fergus Slattery: Lions legend who starred in iconic 1974 South Africa series dies

  • Ireland and British & Irish Lions legend Fergus Slattery has passed away at the age of 77, with the news announced by Blackrock College RFC, his long-time club.
  • Slattery earned 61 caps for Ireland, captaining his country on 18 occasions, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest rugby players Ireland has ever produced.
  • He was a pivotal member of the iconic unbeaten 1974 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa, where he started all four Tests in a formidable back row.
  • His distinguished career also included a Lions tour to New Zealand in 1971 and 18 appearances for the Barbarians, notably scoring a try in the legendary 1973 match against the All Blacks.
  • Inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007, Slattery is survived by his wife Margo and their children, Nikki and Cameron.
