Fernando Alonso will race in Formula 1 for Aston Martin in 2027 after resisting the urge to retire from the sport.
Alonso turned 45 during his 23rd season as an F1 driver, but with just three points, placing him 19th in the drivers’ championship, discussion swirled around his future.
But the Spaniard has reflected on his ability to compete and considers himself fast enough to contend at the top of grands prix.
"F1 has been great to me, I've had an incredible career, I travelled around the world, I raced for more than 23 years, more than 400 grands prix, I achieved more than I ever dreamed of. It took me a little bit of time to make my decision, now I have things very clear in my mind, I will retire from F1... but not yet!
"I still feel fast, motivated, huge passion for F1 and the sport, so, yes, I'm happy to keep racing in the highest category; it is my life."
Aston Martin also confirmed Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll will remain with the team for 2027 for what will be his 11th season in F1.
Alonso added: "I'm very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I'm committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.
"I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special."
A team statement read: “The continuation and stability of the long-standing pairing allows Aston Martin Aramco to fully focus on its development path, harnessing the knowledge and deep-rooted relationships between the drivers and the wider organisation.”
While Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll added: "Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team. Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.
"We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives."
