Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has sharply criticized the expanded World Cup in North America, which has been in the headlines for high ticket prices.
"I think this World Cup is a fiasco for football," the 74-year-old told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Friday.
"$2,000 for a mid-range final ticket - where is this going to end? I have always been in favour of commercialization in football, but not in this extreme form. I don't want to support it by buying tickets."
Hoeness said he would have been able to stay free of charge during the tournament with an acquaintance in Florida.
"But I had absolutely no desire to travel to this World Cup. And even if I had wanted to, I would have lost interest when I was told the preferred location of the house," he said.
According to Hoeness, the accommodation that was offered was only five minutes from the property of US President Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago.
