A total of 102 permits have been granted for mobile campaigns, talks, and walkabouts to the two contesting parties, Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), since the nomination for the Sungai Bakap state by-election on June 22.
Penang Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad announced that 21 permits were approved today (July 1) for the ongoing by-election campaign, which has now reached its tenth day. Notably, none of the permit applications from either party have been rejected thus far.
"I urge everyone to refrain from engaging in provocative actions during the campaign, including acts of vandalism or damaging election campaign materials, until the campaign period concludes in five days," he stated in a press release today (July 1).
The Sungai Bakap state by-election, scheduled for July 6, was necessitated by the death of the incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to stomach inflammation. This by-election features a direct contest between PH candidate Dr. Joohari Ariffin and PN's Abidin Ismail.
Since the campaign began, both PH and PN have been actively engaging with the electorate through various campaign strategies. The issuance of 102 permits highlights the intense level of campaigning, as both parties strive to secure votes. The peaceful conduct of the campaign so far, with no reported incidents of permit rejections, reflects a commitment to fair play and adherence to regulations by both sides.
Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad’s advisory against provocative actions is a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and orderly campaign environment. Vandalism and destruction of campaign materials not only undermine the democratic process but also create unnecessary tension among supporters.
The by-election is closely watched, as it will determine the successor to Nor Zamri Latiff. Both candidates, Dr. Joohari Ariffin and Abidin Ismail, have been vigorously campaigning to win over voters. Dr. Joohari, representing PH, brings a background of experience and promises of continued development, while Abidin Ismail of PN offers a fresh perspective and a focus on change.
As the campaign period draws to a close, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth and peaceful election process. The authorities continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing the importance of respectful campaigning. The upcoming vote will not only decide the immediate political future of Sungai Bakap but also reflect the democratic values upheld by the electoral process.
