A total of 102 permits for mobile campaigns, talks, and walkabouts have been approved so far for the two contesting parties, Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), since the nomination for the Sungai Bakap state by-election on June 22.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad announced that 21 permits were approved today (July 1) for the by-election campaign, which is now in its tenth day. He noted that no permit applications from either party have been rejected so far, indicating a smooth process.

“I would like to continue advising everyone not to provoke anyone during the campaign, including acts of vandalism or damaging election campaign materials, until the campaign period ends in five days," said Datuk Hamzah in a statement today (July 1). His cautionary advice is aimed at maintaining peace and order as the campaign period progresses.

The Sungai Bakap state by-election, scheduled for July 6, is being held following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to stomach inflammation. This by-election features a straight fight between PH candidate Dr. Joohari Ariffin and PN’s Abidin Ismail. Both candidates have been actively engaging with voters through various campaign activities, seeking to win support in this crucial election.

Datuk Hamzah emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations and maintaining decorum during the campaign. He reminded all parties involved to respect each other's campaign materials and to avoid any provocative actions that could lead to conflicts.

As the campaign period enters its final stretch, both PH and PN are ramping up their efforts to connect with voters and present their platforms. The approval of numerous permits for campaign activities demonstrates the vibrancy of the democratic process in Sungai Bakap. The police chief's appeal for peaceful campaigning highlights the commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly election.

In conclusion, the Sungai Bakap by-election is a significant event, drawing attention from both local and national political landscapes. The cooperative efforts between the police and the contesting parties aim to ensure a smooth electoral process, reflecting the democratic values upheld in Malaysia.
