A European tourist’s question about walking in Kuala Lumpur has struck a nerve online, not because it was new, but because it was true.

In a TikTok video posted by @verasplot, the tourist opened by saying how much she loved Malaysia’s food and the friendliness of its people, before asking:

“Why does walking in KL feel like a survival game?”

What she experienced

Coming from Europe where walking is part of daily life, she found that even designated pedestrian crossings in KL offered little reassurance.
Cars continued at speed regardless of whether anyone was trying to cross.

She compared the experience directly to Squid Game, describing the city’s roads as a place where pedestrians take their chances.

“I’m fighting for my life on these roads,” she said, adding that she wished she could explore the city on foot the way she normally would but felt too scared to do so.

Why KL is built this way

Malaysians in the comments largely agreed with her.
The most common explanation was straightforward: KL was built as a car-centric city, not for pedestrians.
One commenter added that cheap fuel prices and the heat made driving the default choice for most Malaysians, leaving walking infrastructure underdeveloped and underused.

Another noted that locals deal with the same reality every day and have simply come to accept it.

A question locals stopped asking

The video tapped into a frustration that most KL residents have long absorbed into their daily lives. Locals already know this. Every few months a tourist notices, posts about it, and the conversation starts again before dying down.

KL wants to be a world class city. But world class cities let you walk to the mamak without fearing for your life.
