MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines stunned world No. 7 Cuba with a 6-0 shutout to claim its first-ever Women's Baseball World Cup win at the Asia-Pacific Secondary Field in Tainan, Taiwan Wednesday afternoon.
The Filipina batters scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning, then surged with five runs in the fourth.
With the regulation reduced from 7 to 5 innings, world No. 21 Philippines shut out Cuba in the top of the fifth with three outs.
The Filipinas improved to 1-1, bouncing back from their opening loss to world No. 1 and 7-time reigning champ Japan on Tuesday.
The Philippines plays one more game later against world No. 15 Great Britain at 6 p.m.
The Filipina batters need to finish in the top three of the five-game group stage to advance to the final stage next year in Rockford, Illinois, United States.
