Filipino injured in Spain train crash that killed 69

A FILIPINO sustained minor injuries, and an entire family of Filipino tourists required emergency consular intervention in the high-speed train collision in Toledo, Spain, last Wednesday.

At least 69 people were killed and 100 were injured in the incident.

The Philippine Embassy in Madrid said the injured Filipino was immediately transported to a local hospital and is recovering. The Filipino’s identity or medical status were withheld by the embassy on the family’s request.

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Analyn Ratonel separately announced that embassy personnel had located and provided immediate assistance to a family of Filipino tourists who were pulled out from the wreckage.

As of Friday, no other Filipino casualties have been reported, and no further requests for assistance from nationals have been logged.

According to Spain’s Ministry for Transport, a Renfe AVE train with 397 passengers rear-ended a stationary Iryo train with 146 passengers near the town of Urda, 150 kilometers south of Madrid.

Initial findings from Spanish investigators reveal that a malfunction in the safety system forced the Iryo train to come to a complete stop due to a signal failure. Preliminary reports point to human error in the manual signaling backup operations, where the incoming Renfe train was erroneously authorized to proceed.

Traveling at speeds approaching 200 kilometers per hour, the Renfe train struck the Iryo train, derailing four carriages and sending a mass of twisted metal down an embankment.

The incident marks Europe’s worst rail disaster this century and is the third deadly train crash in Spain in 2026 alone, fueling heavy political criticism ahead of Spain’s snap elections scheduled for late November. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning.

The Madrid Embassy said it remains in close coordination with Castilla-La Mancha’s civil protection services and rail operators.

Filipino communities across Spain have been urged to account for their members and report anyone who might have been traveling on the Madrid-Andalusia line at the time of the crash.

The embassy released contact numbers for relatives in the Philippines and Spain seeking information on missing loved ones:

– Philippine Embassy 24/7 Hotline: +34 616 491 861

– Renfe Family Assistance Helpline: +34 900 101 020

– Consular Reporting Channel: Affected individuals or families can submit details directly via the embassy’s Official Incident Registration Portal.
