Kota Kinabalu: A 35-year-old Filipino construction worker was sentenced to 35 years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court here for murdering his wife four years ago.
Judge Datuk Celestina Stuel Galid handed down the sentence to IMM13 document holder Nul Sadam Jemsi after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Nul was found guilty of murdering his 22-year-old wife, Nasfidah Japarah, between 10pm and 11.45pm on March 22, 2022, in a rented room on the third floor of Block J, Segama.
He was convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane for male offenders under 50 if spared the death penalty.
The court ordered Nul, who was represented by counsel Jamadi Saleh, to serve his custodial sentence from the date of his arrest on March 22, 2022.
