MANILA, Philippines — Film and television director Monti Puno Parungao, known for his work on GMA Network programs including “Survivor Philippines,” “StarStruck” and “Dear Uge,” died Sept. 1 after battling stage 4 colon cancer. He was 58.
Parungao died Tuesday morning at his home in Quezon City, according to his brother Hardy Parungao. He underwent several surgeries in recent months.
“It is with great sadness that the Parungao family announces the passing of Edgardo Puno Parungao III (Direk Monti) on September 1, 2026,” Hardy said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“Details of a service to celebrate and honor his life will follow. The family is grateful for your prayers, love and support,” he added.
Parungao worked across television, film, advertising, theater and events in a career spanning several decades.
He began working at GMA Network in 1987 and later at various television stations. His career extended beyond television, as he also worked as a screenwriter, producer, editor and director.
Parungao was particularly known for his work in LGBTQ-themed films. He directed the movie “Kape Barako,” which starred actor Johnron Tañada.
Details of the wake and funeral services have yet to be announced.
