SHAH ALAM - A fire broke out at the Jatibarang Landfill in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday night.
A fleet of over a dozen fire engines and water tankers entered the Jatibarang Landfill in Semarang in rotation to tackle the blaze.
According to a report by Indonesian news agency Antara News Jateng, Semarang City Fire Department head Sih Rianung said the fire affected Zones 1, 2, and 3, estimating the damaged area to cover approximately 10 hectares.
He said the blaze was reportedly triggered by build-ups of methane gas deep within the waste heaps.
"Firefighters are working to contain the affected area to prevent the fire from spreading further," he was reported as saying on Thursday.
He noted that the presence of methane gas also caused the fire burning through the refuse to flare up significantly.
Seven fire engines were stationed at strategic locations to spray water supplied continuously by water tankers, with around 50 firefighters deployed to assist in the operation.
Earlier, videos of the blaze went viral on social media, with netizens praying for the safety of those in Semarang.
