SANDAKAN: Victims of the Kampung Bahagia fire have expressed gratitude to the government for helping them replace lost documents through services provided by the National Registration Department (NRD).

Two victims at the temporary relief centre (PPS) at PPR Taman Batu Sapi shared their appreciation while dealing with officers at a mobile counter.

Sandra Musid, 51, said the counter, operating from 8am to 5pm, has made the process much easier.

She lost all her children’s birth certificates in the fire, while only her identity card was saved as it was kept in her bag.

She said her family was asleep when the fire broke out early Sunday morning and escaped after being alerted by neighbours, leaving with only the clothes they were wearing.

Another victim, Maming Andal, 39, also visited the counter to replace the birth certificates of his wife and five children.

“Thank you for setting up the NRD counter here as it makes it easier to replace my family’s documents,” he said.

Maming, who works in the peninsula, said he returned to Sandakan immediately after learning of the incident.

Victims also hope further assistance, especially housing support, will be provided once the temporary relief centres are closed.
