TAWAU: Firemen rescued 40 flash flood victims in four villages here from late Tuesday to early Wednesday.

This is the second time in two weeks that the district was hit by flash floods which inundated several residential areas and major roads.

The first was on Aug 29. Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin said his personnel relocated the flood victims to safer grounds as well as to nearby houses that were unaffected by the flooding.

He said they received emergency calls between 10.53pm and 5.54am, prompting them to deploy fibre boat and fire engine trucks to rescue the victims.

Another 12 were evacuated from Kg Rawa-Rawa, Batu 4, Jalan Apas, comprising seven men and five women, while nine were evacuated from Kg Kongsi 10 to higher grounds.

“The Kg Sungai Gading flash floods did not necessitate any evacuations, despite the fact that initially our team received a call reporting stranded victims.

“Our team kept an eye on traffic and maintained control even though there was no evacuation,” he said.
