Fisherman drowns in Sungai Besut after falling from boat

A 45-year-old fisherman drowned in Sungai Besut after falling from his boat while casting a net, with his body found by members of the public

JERTIH: A 45-year-old inland fisherman was found drowned in Sungai Besut today. The victim, identified as Azmani Mukhtar, is believed to have fallen into the river from his boat while casting a fishing net.

The Jertih Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call at 10.22 am. Chief Mustafa Ismail said six personnel and a fire engine were deployed to the scene near Agro Darau in Kampung Darau, Hulu Besut.

Members of the public discovered the body at 12.11 pm during a search of the area. The body was found approximately three metres from where the victim was believed to have fallen.

A medical team confirmed Azmani’s death at the scene. The fire and rescue team assisted in retrieving the body before handing it over to the police for further action.

Besut police chief Supt Mohd Rozaime Ab Rahim confirmed the incident. He said the body had been sent to the Forensic Unit of Besut Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
