By Mihar Dias September 2025
In 2024, I thought I had already reached my peak as a writer. Four awards in one year — including Creator of the Year — is the kind of recognition that doesn’t usually repeat itself. I told myself: enjoy it, because lightning rarely strikes twice.
Then came 2025. Another award, this time the Gold Milestone Award for crossing five million views on Newswav. If last year was a pleasant surprise, this year feels surreal. To win once is an honour. To win again is humbling.
But to keep being read — to know that people are still spending time with my words — that is something else entirely.
Writing, after all, is not glamorous. It’s lonely. Just me, my thoughts, and often my cynicism for company. There’s no applause when a column is finished. No confetti. Just silence, sometimes interrupted by a sigh, a smirk, or the sound of deleting an entire paragraph because it wasn’t sharp enough. Yet, that silence breaks the moment readers respond.
Some laugh. Some argue. Some roll their eyes. Some send me emails suggesting I seek professional help. But that’s what keeps me going — proof that the words don’t vanish into the void, that they spark a conversation, however small.
As the years pass, I admit, my cynicism has grown. Age does that to you. But cynicism isn’t the goal; it’s merely the seasoning. What I strive for is honesty, dressed in humour, delivered with a little sting.
Writing should make us laugh, yes, but also make us squirm. It should comfort and provoke at the same time.
Of course, I don’t walk this road alone. I share it with my wife — the first reader, sometimes the first critic. (By the way it was her idea to use Mihar Dias as a Byline).
I share it with my fellow writers, because each column and each story adds to the bigger conversation we’re having as a nation and, of course, I share it with the readers. You are the real engine behind these milestones — agreeing, disagreeing, even getting annoyed enough to write back.
Without you, writing is just a monologue. With you, it becomes dialogue.
So, to the VVIPs, creators, partners, and especially to the founders and friends at Newswav — thank you for this platform and this recognition. You’ve given writers like me the space to rant, reflect, and, occasionally, inspire.
Five million views later, I’ve learned that awards aren’t really about peaks. They’re about continuity. They’re reminders that the words still matter, that the pen (or keyboard) hasn’t run dry.
However, let’s be honest: somewhere out there, one cat video on TikTok probably racks up the same number of views in a week. The only difference is, at least my five million came with words.
