TAWAU: Five individuals were seriously injured in two separate road accidents here on Friday and Saturday, both involving reckless driving and unlicensed drivers, according to police.

In the first incident on Friday night, a 21-year-old female driver ran a yellow traffic light at Jalan Damai Batu 1, Jalan Apas, and collided with a motorcyclist and pillion rider, aged 21 and 18.

The impact sent the motorcycle flying, while the Proton Saga 1.5 she was driving veered off the road, crashing into a workshop fence and a parked Subaru XV.

Her 18-month-old nephew, who was also in the car, sustained injuries. All three victims were reported to have suffered serious injuries.

Acting Tawau District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said the woman was heading from Batu 8 Jalan Apas toward town, while the motorcycle was heading from town toward Kampung Titingan.

“The driver failed to slow down when the traffic light turned yellow and instead accelerated before colliding with the motorcycle,” Champin said.

Investigations also revealed that the woman only held a B2 motorcycle license, which does not permit her to drive a car.

In the second incident, a 19-year-old male driver was seriously injured after his Honda City skidded off Jalan Chong Thien Vun at around 1.50am on Saturday.

His female passenger, also 19, sustained minor injuries.

The car was reportedly speeding from town toward Batu 4 Jalan Apas when it struck a road divider, veered into oncoming traffic, and crashed into road barriers over a stretch of about 100 metres.

Both victims were trapped inside the wreckage and had to be rescued by the Tawau Fire and Rescue team.

Police confirmed the driver had no valid license, and neither individual was a local resident.

Champin urged the public to obey traffic laws and avoid driving without proper licenses.

“These violations not only have legal consequences but also put lives at risk,” he said.
