Kota Kinabalu: The Children’s Court will take 10 days to hear the case involving five teenage girls accused of using insulting words towards the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.

The hearing is scheduled from Dec 8 to 19 following case management before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus on Thursday.

The alleged offence took place between 10pm and 11pm on July 15 this year, where the words used were said to have caused distress to the victim.

The girls were jointly charged under Section 507C(1)/34 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The five were released on bail, with the prosecution led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Nor Azizah Mohamad, Nik Haslinie Hashim and Deepa Nair Thevaharan, while lawyers from various firms represented the accused, the victim’s family, and observing bodies such as the Sabah Law Society and Suhakam.
