KALABAKAN: A five-unit housing block, a house and four vehicles were completely destroyed in a fire near the Kampung Kalabakan bridge on Monday night.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin said they received an emergency call at 7.03pm and dispatched a fire engine with four personnel to the scene, about 91km away.
He said the team arrived at 8.57pm, while eight members of the Kalabakan Volunteer Fire Brigade had arrived earlier and carried out efforts to control the blaze.
The fire destroyed the five-unit block measuring 150 feet by 30 feet, a 30-foot by 20-foot house, two cars and two motorcycles, while firefighters used water from a nearby river to extinguish the flames.
Jemishin said no casualties were reported, with the fire brought under control at 10.17pm and the operation ending at 10.28pm, adding that communication was difficult as the location had neither GIRN nor telephone coverage.
