Kota Kinabalu: The fewer Jalur Gemilang in the city during this National Day month is not due to fear of blunders when raising the flag. There are complaints of flags being stolen the day after they are put up, said Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Dato’ Sri Dr Sabin Samitah.

“They put the flags up along the roads or on their buildings, but the next morning they disappear.

“So, we hope those involved in such acts will cooperate, so that the flags put up by City Hall along roadsides, beaches, buildings, vehicles, and elsewhere, whether owned by the city hall, individuals, companies, or government agencies, are not vandalised or taken away,” he said after launching the KKClean Day 2.0 My Clean Village Challenge-Island Edition at Dataran Bandaraya.

The programme, held in conjunction with the National Month celebration 2025, was joined by about 1,000 people, including those from City Hall, federal and state government agencies, institutions of higher learning, the private sector, villagers, and the armed forces.

He said City Hall had already asked commercial building owners to begin hoisting flags and had also distributed them to traders around the city in recent days.

“We are confident that flag flying is steadily increasing,” he added.

On the viral issue of the Jalur Gemilang being hung upside down, he said there were no such incidents in Kota Kinabalu.

“If there are, they are probably unintentional. When we distribute flags, not only from City Hall but also from the Information Department, we also provide guidance on the correct way to display the flag,” said Dr Sabin.

He expressed hope that people will be more careful when putting up the flags, as some mistakes are not intentional.

So far, he said City Hall has not come across cases done deliberately, and where mistakes were made, they were later corrected.
