Flexing your hope muscle

Hope is not pretending the storm isn’t there. Hope is a decision that the sun will rise even in the darkest of nights.

In seasons of grief, failure, burnout or uncertainty, hope can feel thin and elusive. But hope is not just a feeling, it is also the muscle of your mind. And it gets stronger the more you train it.

Feed your mind

There are reps for your thoughts. What you read, watch and tell yourself becomes the soil where hope grows.

As the adage says, “Be careful about what you are thinking. It might just happen.” This is powerful. Have you ever thought about just how potent your thinking is?

Start with small repetitions or reps. Name one win a day: “I got out of bed. I drank water. I had my meal. I showed up.

Remember, when doubt gets loud, evidence quiets it.

Guard your inputs too. You can only take on so much. Yes, you can care about the world without carrying all of its problems. Choose a few trusted sources, get informed, filter what you pick up then close the app.

Senseless doomscrolling drains us. So break that habit.

And watch your language. There is strength in what you say. Swap “I can’t” with “I can” or “I can’t yet.” Replace “It’s impossible” with “There might be a way.”

Words are weights. Choose the ones that can build you up and not weaken you.

Care for your heart

In the gym, you need a spotter who watches your posture and movements. In life, we need spotters. Hope rarely survives in isolation.

Therefore, call the person who lifts you up and makes you laugh. Sit with your person who can simply listen and who doesn’t try to fix you. A friend who stays and is always there for you. Identify the spotters in your life. Stay in touch with them.

Practice gratitude. Stay alert for the good things. Be aware of little perfections: a golden sunset, a cup of soothing tea, a friend who messaged.

Hope lives in details we usually categorize as mundane. Your heart is a reservoir. It pours love when it is needed everyday, in every situation or crisis.

But the heart needs to let go too. It cannot bottle grief which can suffocate hope. Cry if you must. Journal your most intimate fears. And pray for enlightenment.

After all is said and done, make space for light to enter your hurting heart. In this way, healing can begin.

Build a hope kit. Add notes, songs, photos and verses that remind you who you are on good days. Open it during exceptionally hard days. It is a fitting reminder of the best that you can be.

Anchor it

Remember, you have survived the tough days so far. The next step is to picture yourself six months from now. What would your future self thank you for starting today?

For many of us, hope is anchored beyond ourselves — in faith, in family, in community, in God.

You see, hope is not the absence of fear. It is being afraid and still choosing the next step forward. So today, flex it. One rep at a time.

Affirmation: “I have the power of hope in me.”

Love and light.
