Learning from flood incidents in previous years, Irrigation Department has started extensive flood protection works ahead of the monsoon along the Yamuna river to safeguard nearly 30 villages from flash floods.

The department has allotted works worth Rs 22 crore to six agencies for carrying out protection measures at 10 sensitive sites in the district.

Flooding in the Yamuna river creates havoc, damaging crops, roads, and residential areas in villages near the river. More than 30 villages along it remain under constant fear of floods during every monsoon season. Villages including Dakwala, Lalupura, Sadarpur, Mundogarhi, Garhpur Tapu, Nabiabad, Nabipur, Jammukhala, Mustafabad, Nasirpur, and Shergarh Tapu are among the most vulnerable areas.

This year, the department completed the tender and allotment process well in advance to ensure timely execution of works before the arrival of the monsoon.

“After assessing the behaviour and changing course of the Yamuna river during previous floods, several protection works were proposed at vulnerable locations. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini approved all proposed works for Karnal district during the 57th meeting of Haryana State Drought Relief and Flood Control Board held on December 31, 2025,” said Manoj Kumar, Executive Engineer (XEN), Indri Water Services Division, Karnal.

“The work has already started and the target is to complete all projects by June 30,” he added.

The supply of stone boulders has already begun, and the construction of stone studs and strengthening of damaged studs and revetments will start soon, he said.

Protection works are underway at the Modipur complex in Indri constituency at a cost of Rs 4.25 crore, Shergarh Tapu complex at Rs 3.45 crore, Kundakalan complex at Rs 1.73 crore, Dhakwala complex at Rs 1.85 crore, and Dilawra complex at Rs 3.24 crore. Similarly, flood protection works at Manglora (Rs 3 crore), Sadarpur (Rs 2.39 crore), Lalupura (Rs 2.60 crore), Jadoli (Rs 1.23 crore), and Khirazpur (Rs 37 lakh) complexes are also progressing rapidly. The projects mainly include the construction of new stone studs, repair of old damaged studs, strengthening of revetments, and new embankment works to protect residential areas and agricultural land from erosion and floodwater, said XEN Kumar.

Residents of flood-prone villages have welcomed the move and expressed hope that timely completion of these projects would reduce the threat of devastation during the rainy season.

“We are happy that the department has started work earlier than in previous years,” said Anil Kumar, a local resident.
